Moving from Stace 2 to Stace 3

The BSBI have published a list of differences between Stace 2 and 3 (2010):

• Changes 299• Additions 342• Exclusions 35

Unfortunately it is incomplete through omissions, and also does not cover all the subsequent changes in the first reprint (2011). The web page link is http://www.bsbi.org.uk/taxonomy.html and this will go on the SRBS web site

I have produced a list of about 130 changes relevant to Sussex which will appear as an insert in the January Newsletter and also be available to download from the SBRS web site. It will look like this:

Mapmate• We have to use names in the MapMate taxa

list when we submit records to the BSBI• The latest list in December 2012 had lots of

errors and has taken a lot of work to correct• Some names are different to those in Stace 3

despite being based on it• They cannot be changed as they are

associated with individual BRC codes

Mapmate plant names list

• The full list of > 7,100 names will be available to download from the SBRS web site and should be the main reference source for submitting records

• Records with other accepted names will be kept on our database, but will not be imported into MapMate and therefore not submitted to the BSBI

Those of you who are still learning Latin names can sort the list by the ‘Vernacular’ (English) column and read off the Latin name
