SCHOOL CREST AND MOTTO
The colours of the school crest are those of the Coat of Arms of Sir Stamford Raffles: Green, White and Black. The open book symbolises knowledge and the burning torch our commitment to forge character and develop lifeskills.
The school’s motto, Filiae Melioris Aevi, emblazoned across the crest, is Latin for Daughters of a Better Age. It is our pledge to the community that girls who pass through the portals of RGS will not simply inherit a fine tradition but will actively forge a finer future for her community.
To aspire, strive and dare to be active creators of a better age for all
Nurturing the high ability girl to be a leader who will realise her talents in service of nation and community

RAFFLESIAN AWARD
This year’s recipient of the Rafflesian Award is Miss Fatima Siddiqui from the Class of 2015. The RafflesianAward is the highest honour the school bestows on an RGS student in recognition of her all-round excellence, invaluable contributions and service to the school.
Fatima Siddiqui was a distinguished pupil of Raffles Girls’ School from 2012to2015.Anintelligentstudent,outstanding leader and exemplary young lady, Fatima demonstrated her potential to excel the moment she set foot in Year 1 at RGS. She displayed a maturity beyond her age in both thought and deed.
Asastudent, sheexcelledintheRafflesProgramme, becauseofherexemplaryworkethicsand attitude towards learning. A self-directed learner and highly motivated, Fatima inspires confidence because she is disciplined, systematic and purpose-driven. A passionate learner who enjoys intellectual challenges and academic rigour, Fatima is especially interested in Mathematics and the Sciences, particularly Biology, and invests her time and effort in pursuit of her passion. A top student in various academic subjects, Fatima has consistently done well every year. She participated in a wide range of enrichment and mentorship programmes, competitions and forums, namely, the Biomedical and Mathematical Olympiads, F1 in Schools programme, Singapore Science and Engineering Fair just to name a few. She recognises the value of challenging herself in a field of the best, like-minded individuals in her interest areas.
Her abilities and interests are not limited to the Sciences. Fatima was also a scholar in theRegionalStudiesProgramme(takingMalayasa3rd language) and read Area Studies (SoutheastAsia)atYears3and4.Shealsoparticipated intheAustralasianPhilosothonin Year 2, a competition that has students explore and debate philosophical and ethical issues,andherteamemergedChampionsin2013.
Her desire to learn and develop herself extends beyond academic pursuits because she strongly believes that there is a greater purpose to learning beyond grades or competitions. Shehasfound‘greaterpurpose’inservingothersinthecommunity.AsVice-HeadPrefect,Fatima has been exemplary in duty and service. A firm believer in leading by example, Fatima was also active in her class committee in Years 1 and 2 and was a CLE representative. She viewed every role as equally important to the cohesiveness and effectiveness of the group, class or school community. Equally adept at taking the lead or being a part of a team, her adaptability and strong sense of mission enable her to thrive in meeting organisational

needs. Ever ready to offer her assistance to anyone in need, Fatima is well-liked by her peers and they rely on her both as a friend as well as a leader.
Fatima balances her love for Mathematics and the Sciences with her passion for the performing arts and photography. She is an active member of the Angklung Ensemble. Choosing to be a part of a musical group was a way to demonstrate her belief that everyone has a part to play in nurturing a society in harmony, much like every note that is played in a piece of music. In giving back to society, Fatima has volunteered in various activities, especially with her Co-Curricular Activity, which allows her and her ensemble to bring joy to people, especially children in various homes. She finds giving back to society in however small ways the most enriching moments in her life. Her ability to empathise with children from challenging backgrounds is what enables her to do so much good for those we often fail to notice in society.
In her spare time, she enjoys photography because she marvels at the magic of capturing beauty, emotions and a story in a single snapshot. She sees photography as a form of creative expression that shares the story and emotions of not just the photographer, but the subjects as well – creating a very human connection despite the distance between them. It is through her keen observation skills that she is able to empathise with those she photographs and interacts with, bridging any social ‘gaps’ with humility and respect, and develop in her a sincere appreciation for diversity.
When asked what inspires her in life, she describes in her own words the move her family madewhentheymigratedfromPakistantoSingaporeastheinspiration:“When I was still crawling along at the tender age of one, my parents packed our bags, dried their tears and shifted us from Pakistan to Singapore. It was only much later… that I finally began to realise how profound an impact this shift had had, was having and would have on my life.
We like to think that we see as far as we do because we stand on our own two feet, but our vision is only so great because we stand on the shoulders of giants. Bolstered by the good people who taught me, those who cared for me when I stumbled and friends who lent a hand when my own feet gave way, I found myself in a nurturing environment. I marvelled as all of us learnt how to walk the tight rope between integration and acceptance. The effort put into maintaining this balance allowed me to retain a unique sense of individuality while acquiring an identity that was also uniquely Singaporean.
I suppose that is, after all, Singapore’s secret — her charming plan to empower, and nurture individuals who can, and will then build on what they have been given, in Singapore, for Singapore.”
The Rafflesian Award bears testimony to Fatima’s all-round excellence in all aspects of school life. Fatima has a strong sense of purpose, motivation to use all her gifts and talents to serve others and an unwavering desire to live and leave a legacy of good. Besides being an intelligent, ethical thinker, Fatima is a sincere, compassionate leader and epitomises the all-rounded young woman that the school aspires to make of every RGS girl.
