Structure Deterioration

CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

The Bridge is adjacent to two driveways that share an entrance. Due to the proximity of the driveways to thebridge, a protective Metal Beam Rail (MBR) system cannot be attached to one side of the concrete parapet of thebridge, which leaves a dangerous blunt end exposed for vehicles travelling along Route 82 (see circle in photo). An MBR system is attached to the other side of the parapet (see arrow).

Existing Safety Concerns

CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

The bridge (and channel) are proposed to be relocated to the south along Route 82 to permit the installation of aprotective rail system on the new concrete barrier to eliminate a dangerous blunt end condition.

Existing Safety Concerns

Bridge 02510 is proposed to be relocated away from theShared driveway entrance to accommodate safety improvements.

Approximate new location(proposed)

Existing Bridge location

CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

• In addition, the stream at inlet runs too closely and parallel to the roadway.

• The roadway is settling at the inlet side.

• Vertical posts have virtually no room for deflection.

Existing Safety Concerns, continued…

CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

• Access road

• Temporarily relocate overhead utilities

• Implement detour

• Install cofferdam at new proposed bridge location

• Install box culvert & lay out proposed stream realignment

• Remove cofferdam & relocate water to new stream

• Remove existing structure and stone wall
