Program Overview
This Master’s in health professional’s education is a two year
program. It will be offered using a blended approach i.e.
different sub-units of a module are offered via both online
and face- to- face modalities. This is to let the students learn
in a flexible manner and let them learn without affecting
their duties and responsibilities in their home institution.
Furthermore, it is to let them apply what they are learning
while still being at their home institutions.
In the online modules there will be web based discussions,
tutoring on projects, and uploading of assignments.
There will be two face to face modules every year each
lasting 2 weeks where students demonstrate facilitation
skills, collaborate with their peers and receive feedback and
coaching from experts on their project and thesis.
The educational research and project module will be offered
parallel to the other modules. This is to aid the students work
on their projects throughout the program by achieving set
milestones/tasks and also help them formulate research
questions and ideas during the process.

Background
There is a the need to transform the health professional education due to increased public expectations in healthcare, and societal trends towards increased accounta-bility which have led to requirements for quality assurance and standards in health sciences education. There are demands from the profession, government and the public for greater scrutiny of the education process resulting in auditing and appraisal of the teaching-learning process. Health Professional Educators can conduct faculty develop-ment, quality audit and assurance activities, introduce new educational strategies, learning technologies, apply existing and new assessment tools. They can design, develop and review curricula based on evidence and context. They also support health professional education in the con-text of the increasing need to train more health profession-als with limited resources. We need qualified health profession educators who not only are excellent teachers but also can drive/lead the transformation to a better quality of health profession edu-cation with evidence-based approach and recognition of the community needs. Jimma University and Center for International Health, Lud-wig Maximilians Universität (CIH-LMU) organized a stake-holder meeting in Debre Birhan (Dec 8-12, 2014) where the program need was established and then was designed by experts from LMU, Jimma University, Jhpiego Ethiopia. ICAP Ethiopia, Mekelle University, Addis Ababa University, and the Federal Ministry of Health. It was then further developed through series of meetings to reach at this point.
