PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dwayne Hopwood Principal
It was great to see everyone return to school happy and rested this week. I never cease to be astounded by how much some of the boys grow over the summer! Quite a few said “goodbye” at the end of last year shorter than me and many retuned to say “hi” looking down at me from a considerable height. Can I extend our warm welcome to parents with sons just starting high school in Year 7 and to all the parents of new enrolments in 2017. We issue #Ashtag via email every Friday during term so that parents know what is happening and to keep you in touch with the daily school lives of your sons. It is for this reason that we include so many photographs of the everyday life of the school. We know that it can be hard to feel involved with school when your son leaves Primary school and we try to keep this involvement alive as much as possible. I had the honour of attending the Inner West Council Australia Day Awards last week. Our outgoing School Captain, Logan Tuara, was awarded the Young Citizen of the Year Award. Congratulations on this wonderful recognition! The citation acknowledged Logan’s leadership in the school, the community and with younger students. It also acknowledged his tireless commitment to others through service and volunteering as part of our school’s volunteering program. Given that the population of the merged Inner West Council is now about 165,000 residents and given the density of schools in the LGA this is a significant and well deserved accolade. Logan plans to combine leadership and service to the community while starting his combined degree in Arts /Economics at Sydney University this year.

Even though the end is still a long way off, Year 7 has taken their first steps to completing high school. The boys’ first day was accompanied by sweltering heat and a sudden brief storm right in the middle of lunch. Besides meeting their new classmates and their team teachers the boys also completed various orientation activities to make sure that everyone has a happy and positive start to school. At lunch Year 7 was welcomed with a sausage sizzle and in the afternoon they wrote letters to themselves about their first day. These letters have been sealed and will be kept until the boys attend their Year 12 Graduation. It will be wonderful to look back and see what they did, the things they experienced and how they felt on their first day in high school.

FEELING CONNECTED UNIT ONE
The first unit of English our Year 7 students focus on involves discovering the connections students make with each other, both within their school and their community. Students explore ideas of identity, belonging, family, friendships and group membership. Focus topics include: inclusion versus exclusion; peer group relationships and individual responses. A variety of texts are explored and students develop their composing skills whilst analysing their ideas about identity and belonging and relationships with others and their world.

A concept that we continually stress at our school is that we are a community and in successful communities people all look out for each other. We reminded the boys in our daily notices this week about being careful of allergens and of the need to think about others. It would be great if parents could reinforce this at home. We ask that the boys do not share food with their friends because they may be totally unaware of the possible allergic or anaphylactic reactions that may result. We also have reminded the boys that we cannot guarantee that the school is allergen free and they need to take particular care if they have a known condition. While we actively discourage having nuts on site it isn’t possible to guarantee this. If you could reinforce this in your discussions at home it would help us immensely.
ALLERGEN ADVICE
YEAR 11 PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT EVENING TUESDAY 7TH FEBRUARY 2017
Dear Parent/Guardian
On Tuesday 7thFebruary there will be an information evening for Year 11 students and their parents regarding their Preliminary HSC assessment. The meeting will be held in the school hall between 6.15 - 7.30 pm. Parents are asked to be at the school by 6.15 to sign in and receive the associated Preliminary HSC documentation prior to the start of the presentation. Attendance at this evening is mandatory and students must have a parent/guardian over the age of 18 to accompany them.
CANTEEN PAYMENTS
Last year the SRC requested that the canteen investigate the possibility of having EFT payment facilities. Many students have debit cards and use these more than cash. Mr Hopwood negotiated this with the canteen operator late last year. The school canteen is now able to accept debit and credit card payments from boys who would prefer to pay this way. Cash is of course still acceptable.

HOMEWORK CENTRE
The Homework Centre will be available for students again in 2017 due to the generous support of Wests Ashfield. If you would like your son to receive tutoring or assistance please complete the attached application form and return it to the office or Ms Gorton. The Homework Centre is staffed with teachers who provide support and tutoring for free. The Centre is open on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. Numbers are limited and we expect that boys who attend will attend for at least a term at a time. If you have any questions about the Centre please contact Heather Gorton, the school’s Community Liaison Officer.
