FEDERALISM

Topic/Objective: To identify one of the seven principles of the U.S. Constitution.

Essential Question: How does the Constitution set up a system of government that shares power between the state and federal levels?

*U.S. Constitution

1) The U.S. Constitution is the “supreme law of the land”

2) Establishes the framework for running the gov’t

*Federalism

1) Def’n - A system of government that shares power between all levels of government: National State County City Tribal

2) Some powers are delegated to the national gov’t and some are reserved for the states

3) States have their own laws, courts, constitutions, and elected officials

4) The Framers used federalism to structure the Constitution.

5) The 10th Amendment to the Constitution allows for Federalism. "The powers not delegated to the United States by the

Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
