CORE BUSINESS CORE BUSINESS

• Most of Facebook's revenues comes from credits and advertisements that are served from the website's Flyers application.

• Microsoft is Facebook's exclusive partner for serving banner advertising and as such Facebook only serves advertisements that exist in Microsoft's advertisment inventory.

• According tocomScore, an internet marketing research company, Facebook collects as much data from its visitors as Google and Microsoft, but considerably less than Yahoo!.

CRITICISM OF FACEBOOK

Notifications on websites

There has been a trend for social networking sites to send out only 'positive' notificationsto users. For example sites such as Bebo, Facebook, and Myspace will not sendnotifications to users when they are removed from a person's friends list

Access to information

Many social networking services, such as Facebook, provide the user with a choice of whocan view their profile. This prevents unauthorized user(s) from accessing their information.Parents have become a big problem to teens who want to avoid their parents to accesstheir MySpace or Facebook accounts

To edit information on a certain social networking service account, the social networkingsites require you to login or provide an access code. This prevents unauthorized user(s)from adding, changing, or removing personal information, pictures, and/or other data.

Risk for child safety

Citizens and governments have been concerned by a misuse by child and teenagers of socialnetwork services, particularly in relation to online sexual predators. A certain number of actionshave been engaged by governments to better understand the problem and find some solutions

Trolling

A common isuse of social networking sites such as Facebook is that it is occasionally used toemotionally abuse individuals. Such actions are often referred to as trolling. It is not rare forconfrontations in the real world to be translated online

Interpersonal communication

Interpersonal communication has been a growing issue as more and more people haveturned to social networking as a means of communication."Benniger (1987) describes howmass media has gradually replaced interpersonal communication as a socializing force

Patent Issue s

On June 15, 2010, the United States Patent and Trademark Office awarded Amazon.com a patent for "SocialNetworking System" based on its ownership of PlanetAll . The patent describes a Social Networking Systemas a networked computer system provides various services for assisting users in locating, and establishingcontact relationships with, other users

Business Models of Business Models of FacebookFacebook

Here are seven major aspects of Facebook you can use to increase the visibility of your startup, business, product or service on facebook

1. Set Up Your Graph:Profiles & Privacy2. Make Connections:Networks, Groups & Events3. The Need for Feed:Your [Shared] Social Activity Stream4. Share Your Content:Share & People-Tag Your Stories & Media5. App to the Future:The Facebook Platform, APIs, & Applications6. Pay to Play:Ad Networks, Sponsored Stories, & Paid Distribution7. Show Me The Bunny:Gifts, Points, & Virtual Currency

More than one million developers and entrepreneurs from more than 180 countries More than 550,000 active applications currently on Facebook Platform Every month, more than 70% of Facebook users engage with Platform applications More than 250,000 websites have integrated with Facebook Platform More than 100 million Facebook users engage with Facebook on external websites every

month

Set Up Your Graph: Profile Set Up Your Graph: Profile & Privacy& Privacy

Set Up Your Graph: Profiles & PrivacyIt all begins with your Facebook profile, your privacy settings, and a few friends. Your profile is the virtual depiction of YOU on Facebook — depending on how you customize your ,Facebook privacy settingsyou can display as much or as little of yourself as you care to the entire worl, just to your friends, or to no one at all. This includes your notes, photos, videos, your one-liner profile status, your relationship status, your location & contact information, the messages left on your wall, etc. See an example below — currently I expose most info to everyone in my network, however I only share my phone and IM info with my friends:

Make Connections: Networks, Make Connections: Networks, Groups & EventsGroups & Events

In addition to your personally-defined set of social graph connections, you also have a set ofconnections defined by your participation in Networks, Groups, and Events. A Network is a groupof people that are part of a common workplace, geographical location, or a school. This is a formalaffiliation as defined or approved by Facebook, and typically you need to have an email address toparticipate (except for geographical groups)

The Need for Feed: Your [Shared] The Need for Feed: Your [Shared] Social Activity StreamSocial Activity Stream

Of all the feature innovations Facebook has introduced, News Feed (& Mini-Feed) is for meperhaps the most impressive — because it’s a very simple yet elegant way to share information. Ayear ago when these features were, first introduced most of the noise that ensued was due to theinitial user revolt that occurred with the display of what users presumed was (previously) privateinformation

Share Your Content: Share & People-Tag Share Your Content: Share & People-Tag Your Stories & MediaYour Stories & Media

Once the News Feed construct is established, it’s interesting to consider how you can use it todistribute stories and content and media. By using the Post a Link or share button (either insideFacebook, or on the Facebook toolbar for Firefox, or from the Share button for Internet Explorer),it’s easy to post something either as a message to specific users, or to no one in particular via theFeed

App to the Future: The Facebook App to the Future: The Facebook Platform, APIs, & ApplicationsPlatform, APIs, & Applications

Certainly no Facebook conversation would be complete without a discussion of the Facebook Platform and the APIs & apps that bring them together. With the launch of Platform in May, Facebook has arguably delivered the most exciting and innovative application development environment on the web today. As mentioned above, there are already hundreds of startups building Facebook apps, and a few larger brand name companies as well, with thousands of apps shipped live in just a few short months

Pay to Play :Ad Networks, Sponsored Pay to Play :Ad Networks, Sponsored Stories, & Paid Distribution DistributionStories, & Paid Distribution Distribution

As developers compete to access the social graph via apps, advertising networks compete to access the pocketbooks of those same developers. At the moment most of these ad networks’ initial adoption appears to be coming primarily from new apps who want distribution and are willing to pay for it, rather than traditional ‘off-Facebook’ brand businesses. That said, the promise of larger advertising dollars on Facebook remains a huge brass ring for both emerging ad networks on Facebook as well as Facebook itself.

A robust virtual economy is a good sign that you have a highly engaged user base. Virtual goods arepretty much meaningless without context; there is direct correlation between the engagement level auser feels with your product and their willingness to purchase virtual goods. Thus, if you help yourusers feel more like citizens rather than just bystanders, they are much more likely to participate inyour virtual economy.

ADVERTISINGADVERTISING

Recently Facebook has been evolved in the advertising

function, one of the most important advantages through

FB, it can narrow down the advertising specifically to the

market segmentation. Two Types of advertising could be places in

the FB : a. Advertising Per Click b. Advertising Per Impression
