Preparation

Drawlargecoconuttreesonamagneticwhiteboard.Placemagneticlettersontheboardasthoughtheyarehangingfromthepalmfronds.Putthelettersinalphabeticalorder.

Introduction

ReadChicka Chicka Boom Boomtoyourclass.Afterreading,askchildren,“Whatdidyounoticeabouttheorderofthelettersinthestory?”(ThelettersareinABCorder.)Theninvitestudentstorecitethealphabetasyoupointtoeachletterontheboard.

Procedure

1. Reviewthealphabetwithstudents.Makesurestudentsunderstandthateachlettermakesitsownsoundandthatlettersareusedtogethertomakewords.Remindstudentsthattheirnamesaremadeupofletters.

2.Usethemagnetstobuildthenameofachildinyourclass.Thenaskchildrentorepeatthefollowingchantasyouclapoutthelettersinthechild’sname.
