Searching the Internet HOW DO I SEARCH THE INTERNET? The amount of data available is so vast that it can be daunting. To help you find a specific fact you use a search engine. Here are some examples:
www.ask.co.uk www.google.co.uk www.yahoo.co.ukSearches can be typed in Question
form. See Window below
To begin a search: type the address of the search engine in this box.
Type here what you want to search for. Try to be specific. DO NOT USE common word ie THE, TELEVISION ETC, as you will get thousands of web results back! An example – “Museum” would bring back all museums, but if you type “Museum+Glasgow” it would be a more dedicated search!” See next page for results! For Pictures, clicking the image link will result in pictures of Museums

What is E‐Mail What is Electronic Mail? E‐mail, or electronic mail, is the Internet’s version of the postal service. Instead of putting a letter in a postbox you send a message from your computer to another computer. You can send e‐mails to other people who also have access to the Internet. What is an e‐mail address? To be able to send and receive e‐mail, you will be given a university e‐mail address when you register, alternatively pick up a form from the Helpdesks indicated in section 14. Just like your home address, it is easy to understand: joe.bloggs is the name of the user @ is pronounced “at” strath is the domain name the University has registered with the Internet Society ac means the domain belongs to an academic institution uk means the domain is on a computer in the UK . when you give someone your e‐mail address you say “dot” to signify the full stop. If you were asked to read this e‐mail address over the telephone you would say: “joe’dot’bloggs“at”strath’dot’ac’dot’uk” E‐mail Etiquette? There are some well accepted rules or “netiquette” as it is called that a responsible e‐mail user tries to follow: 1. Choose your words carefully
don’t write anything you would not be prepared to say to the person face‐to‐face ils – is there a chance that it could be read in a different context from what you
meant to say?
2.
The main mail messages are:
ptive subject heading
iv. quote from the original e‐mail if replying to a message
. Most e‐mail programs provide a filing system for storing messages. Use it!
. Most e‐mail programs provide a range of features to help you process your message.
. If you are sarcastic use a “smiley” ie :‐) made up of :, ‐ and ) at the end.
6. Never type IN UPPERCASE as that is seen as shouting on the Internet.

Accessing H drive via Internet Explorer Ensure you are Logged into “BlueSocket” (See Section 4)
Webdrive is our friendly name for the WebDAV protocol. Webdrive allows you to access files stored on a network computer at the University from any other computer connected to the Internet, using the Internet Explorer web browser. We recommend that you use Webdrive via your PEGASUS log in to access your H drive (home drive) on a regular basis to backup essential files – up to 50mb of data can be stored. Then should your laptop, USB key or CD/DVD based files become corrupted you will have a University backed up copy available from anywhere on the Internet. As access is via https your data is securely transferred. In Windows Vista there is currently no way to save the H drive via Internet Explorer, which is why we recommend that you connect using PEGASUS.

To further protect your laptop you should regularly run Windows update and install any Critical Updates and Service Packs found (see Section 11 for details). There may also be occasions when you need to run McAfee manually, e.g. if there is a significant threat from a new virus that is spreading quickly.

Section 15 ‐ Glossary – What do you mean by?
Blue Socket: Blue Socket is the login required by the University systems to allow access to the Internet. Everyone at the University requires to login to gain access and use the network services. It requires a DS usernumber and password
What is PEGASUS?
PEGASUS is the University web based communication system. PEGASUS is available on any web‐enabled computer whether on Campus, at home or accessing via a wireless connection in a coffee shop in New York. You can see and amend your personal details, see your current list of classes, receive notification of class test and exam results, and pay your University and Accommodation fees. You will need your DS usernumber and password, issued with your registration form and you should be able to log on once you have registered. PEGASUS has an announcement facility used by the University to communicate information to students so you should log on frequently to check announcements.
Web proxy: The University uses a server to allow communications with the Internet.
Wireless Wireless network connectivity is available throughout the campus. http://wireless.strath.ac.uk/locations.html
LAN: Local Area Network – this allows you access to the Internet and your network drive.
Network Cable: The cable required to access from Halls is a Network Cable. These can be purchased from the Helpdesks.
ISP: An ISP is an Internet Service Provider. Every computer requires an ISP to get internet access from a Telephone Line. Some ISP’s have contracts so be careful.
Webdrive/H Drive /Network Drive
This is a drive which allows you to store important information for accessing later. Information on this drive can be accessed from any open access PC automatically. This drive is backed up by IT Services and is a safe place to use as storage.
USB Pens/ Flash Drive
Flash Drives are portable storage. They come in different sizes. It should be noted that they do still require to be backed up.
Back Up If a document is important, do not keep just one copy of it. It is important to “Back Up” important documents to the Network Drive or a Memory Pen.
