ScriptureReadingGenesis12:1-4NowtheLordsaidtoAbram,‘Gofromyourcountryandyourkindredandyourfather’shousetothelandthatIwillshowyou.Iwillmakeofyouagreatnation,andIwillblessyou,andmakeyournamegreat,sothatyouwillbeablessing.Iwillblessthosewhoblessyou,andtheonewhocursesyouIwillcurse;andinyouallthefamiliesoftheearthshallbeblessed.’SoAbrahmwent…Acts2:37-39Nowwhentheyheardthis,theywerecuttotheheartandsaidtoPeterandtotheotherapostles,‘Brothers,whatshouldwedo?’Petersaidtothem,‘Repent,andbebaptizedeveryoneofyouinthenameofJesusChristsothatyoursinsmaybeforgiven;andyouwillreceivethegiftoftheHolySpirit.Forthepromiseisforyou,foryourchildren,andforallwhoarefaraway,everyonewhomtheLordourGodcallstohim.’DoxologyPraiseGod,fromwhomallblessingsflow;PraiseGod,allcreaturesherebelow;PraiseGodabove,yeheavenlyhost;PraiseFather,Son,andHolyGhost.Amen.NotesfromtheDirectorofMusicToday’smusicisentirelyby19thcenturyBritishcomposers.PerhapsthemostfamousofthegroupisSirArthurSullivan(1842-1900)whoisknownmoreforhisoperettasthanhischurchmusic.ThePreludeisfromhislittle-knownoratorioTheProdigalSoncomposedin1869justbeforehisstringofsuccessfulcollaborationswithW.S.Gilbert.AnothergiantofVictorianmusic,butmostlychurchmusic,wasJohnStainer(1840-1901).ProbablyhismostfamousworkishiscantataTheCrucifixion.HisFantasia,heardasthePostlude,isfoundinhisprimerfororganplaying,usedbymanyaspiringorganistsforoverahundredyears.Theleast-knowncomposerofthebunchisJamesHook(1746-1827)whocomposedtheOffertory.Thisisapleasantlittlepiece,muchinthestyleofMozart.HookwasanorganistatvariouschurchesinLondon,andbestknownforhismanysecularsongs.Asateacher,hedidmuchtopromotetheplayingofthepianowhichatthetimewasslowtocatchoninpopularity.Hook

istheonlyoneoftoday’scomposerswhowasnotknighted.WhenIwassearchingformusictocelebratethechurch,Iexpectedtofind“IWasGlad”bySirC.H.H.Parryinourlibrary,butfoundinsteadadelightfulanthembySirGeorgeElvey(1816-1893).ElveywasformanyyearsorganistatSt.George’s,Windsorcastle.Itwastherethathecomposedthetunethatwouldeventuallyaccompany“Come,yethankfulpeople,come”(#803)andhenamedhistuneafterhischurchpost.ThetextfortheAnthemcomesfromPsalm122andhasbeenaninspirationtomanyothercomposers.Therearemanybeautifulcanticleswhichareseldomdoneanymore.TheBenedictusisfoundinouroldBookofPraise(#610)settoachantbySirJohnGoss(1800-1880).GosswasorganistatSt.Paul’scathedralformanyyearsandhemademajorcontributionstochurchmusicincludingthetunefor“Praise,mySoul,theKingofHeaven”.AlsocalledtheSongofZechariah,thetextfortheIntroitcomesfromLuke1:68andwasproclaimedbythefatherofJohntheBaptist.InitweareremindedaboutGod’sholycovenant.Today PopUpAnniversaryDisplayAnothereventofour200thcelebrations,enjoythemomentsofthecongregation’slivesintheChurch(anycongregation!)-aphototaken,abaptismalgownworn,aSundaySchoollessonsheetstudied,apindonned,acertificatereceived,anOrderofServiceofmeaning-andwriteyournameandadescriptionoftheoccasiononasmallcardfordisplayinSt.Andrew’sHallaftertheservice.CardsofIntentionAsacongregation,wehaveembarkedona200thAnniversaryCapitalFundAppealwithagoalofatleast$150,000that,whenmatchedwithTrustFunds,willallowforcontinuedworkupontherenovationofoursanctuary.CardsofIntentionhavebeendistributed,coveringtheperiodNovember2017-April2018,andarerequestedtoday.Additionalblankcardscanbefoundbytheboxinwhichsealedenvelopescanbeleft,atthebackofthesanctuary.Allresponsesarekeptconfidentialandarefullyrevisable.Pleaseconsiderthisappealprayerfully.

“ExcessiveScottishness”

wastheaccusationleveledatcelebrantsofStAndrew’sDayinthe1800’sbutthingschanged

whenwomenwereinvitedin.WomenwerenotinvitedtoSt.Andrew’sDaycelebrationsintheearly1800’s.Thefirstfestivities,allmale,wereheldatMoore’sCoffeeHouse,adowntownestablishmentthatprovidedalotmoretodrinkthancoffeeasevidencedbyatleast15lavishtoastsfollowingalavishdinneratwhichtheCommandantandothergarrisonofficerswereinvited.Notonlywerethe‘fairlassesofUpperCanada,’toastedinabsentia,buttheKing,theQueen,theDukeofYork,theBritisharmy,eachoftheprovincesthatthenexistedand‘ouradoptedcountry,UpperCanada’...“MayitssodbeassacredintheeyesofalltrueScotsmenasthelandoftheirfathers.”Acomplaintof“excessiveScottishness”ledtothisemphasisbeingreconsideredin1842.FestivitiesbeganwithasermonatSt.Andrew’sandthenamarchledbytwopipersinfullCelticdress,toAlwingtonHouseatthewestendofKingStreetwheretheGovernorGenerallived.AdowntowndinnerthenfollowedatDaley’sHotel,lateintothenight.By1872,womenwerefinallyallowedintotamercelebrationsheldatcityhall.

AIDSisnowtheleadingcauseofdeathamongteenagersinsub-SaharanAfrica,aregionstilldevastatedbytheHIVepidemic.Thesedeathscanbeavoidedthroughpreventionandtreatment,education,andsexualandreproductivehealthcare.ThePresbyterianChurchinCanada,throughPresbyterianWorldService&Development,supportsHIVandAIDSprogramsthatfightstigmaanddiscrimination,teachandequippeopletopreventthespreadandthetransmissionbetweenmotherandchild,andprovidehomebasedcareandmedicationstothoselivingwiththedisease.OnWorldAIDSday,December1st,weliveinChrist’shopeforaworldwithoutAIDSandprayforthosewhoselivesremainaffected.Thisyear,throughofferingsdesignated“Mission,”membersofSt.Andrew’sKingstonhaveagoalofcontributing$3,700totheworkofChristthroughPWS&D.WeeklyGivings Budgeted Received November122017$6,759.00 $3,275.05YeartoDate $202,745.00 $191,752.66
