Fire safety
Within any building’s totalfunctionality, one elementis paramount: its ability toensure a safe environmentin the event of emergencyconditions. If and whensuch a situation occurs,Life Safety for the occupantsand for emergency services, and damage limitation for thebuilding fabric, immediatelybecomes the priority for theventilation system.
Fan options forLife Safety systems
Fläkt Woods units designed foremergency ventilation and smokeextraction at high temperatures include:
JM Aerofoil
JM High Temperature Aerofoil
JM Bifurcated Aerofoil
JM Multi-stage Aerofoil
Centrifugal Single Inlet
UDA & DVA High TemperatureRoof Units
All these fan types are suitable forboth normal and emergency smokeventilation conditions, and can beinverter speed-controlled.
In normal mode, they have lowerSpecific Fan Power (SFP) values andoptimised running costs, because theinverter controls average powerconsumption and extract rate.
Specific control functions
Our fan technology plays severalimportant roles in the event of anemergency condition. Each couldbe an important defence againstlife-threatening fumes and hot smoke:
Control and removal of hotsmoke/gases to give time foroccupants to escape – evenif the fan itself is subject tohigh temperatures
Extraction of ‘cool’ smoke whileit remains unstable in the earlystages of a fire
Pressurisation: supply of cleanair into escape routes to holdback smoke
Clearance: removal of residualsmoke after fire is containedand suppressed
Natural ventilation may be inadequate forthese needs, particularly where ‘cool’smoke may be involved, and could becompromised by prevailing winds.
Fläkt Woods has the necessaryexperience, and product optionsavailable, to manage such importantrisk factors.
100 years of air movement knowledge, combined with our in-house expertiseand contributions to the developmentof industry standards, mean we are wellplaced to respond to new challengesand regulation changes.
Through continuous Research,Development and Innovation we haveconsistently advanced fan technologyto deal with emergency fire protection.

100% X-rayedimpeller components
By the nature of the process, die castingof metals can conceal hidden porosity. This can structurally reduce corestrength, and increase the possibilityof fatigue or failure, especially atelevated emergency temperatures.
However, with Fläkt Woods’ axial fans, you have the assurance that all castimpellers have been subjected to X-rayinspection to ensure test complianceand product integrity.
Complete smoke extraction systemsFire safety
10
In a fire emergency, smokeis a potential killer unlessit is quickly controlled. It can also hamper thework of emergency services.Whatever the type andfunction of a building, diligent planning for thefast, effective removalof smoke is an essentialprovision to ensurepersonnel safety.
Fläkt Woods has the experienceto provide complete and preciselytailored solutions for almost anyindustrial, commercial or residentialapplications including:

Protective ventilation for car parks
11
In enclosed or undergroundcar parks, a fire emergencyrequires fast, intelligentaction to contain and controlthe problem. Fläkt Woodstechnology, applicationknowledge, expertise andstate of the art softwarecombine to provide aunique approach, withtailored solutions.
Traditional car park ventilation techniquesare based on air change rates and ductruns with vertical droppers and high/lowlevel grilles. This ducting typically uses upvaluable headroom and parking space, and such systems are costly to installand operate. Fläkt Woods can providea modern alternative solution providingbenefit to client and user alike, whilstcomplying fully with the latest technicalrequirements and European standards.
Operating on demand
Unlike these old-style systems, withFläkt Woods solutions there is norequirement for the ventilation system torun continuously. Our systems operateonly when required, using a series ofstrategically placed, independentlycontrolled fans.
Under normal operational conditions, sensors detect pollution such as carbonmonoxide (CO), Liquefied PetroleumGas (LPG) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx).Selected fans automatically induce thecontaminated air and direct it to themain extract point for discharge.
In the event of a fire emergency, FläktWoods systems control the directionof smoke travel. Smoke sensors triggerfans to run up to full design speed todirect the smoke, via other fans asnecessary, to the nearest extract point.Smoke, heat and toxic fumes areremoved swiftly and safely from a fireby the shortest route.
Tailored solutions using CFD
Our car park solutions are individuallymodelled to suit each building’s layout.Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)software, combined with Fläkt Woodsin-house expertise and ownfully-researched input data, is used toplot the ideal number, type and locationof fans required for each application.
A computerised 3D model evaluatesairflow with only the main extract systemin use. This identifies main airflowroutes and highlights any stagnantor recirculatory areas. Our fans are thensuperimposed upon this model andplaced in optimum positions to achieveboth normal extract and emergencyfire/smoke extract.
Main extract fans in these installationscan be smaller because there is lessductwork resistance. Installation costsare lower and, because the systemoperates only when required, runningcosts are also minimised.
Fan options forcar park ventilation
Fläkt Woods fan technologiesdesigned for use as part of thesemore complete, cost-effective andtailored ventilation solutions forcar parks include:
Jet ThrustIn-line axial fans that are reversible, truly symmetrical impellers to provideefficient flow in both directions.
Induction ThrustShallow-profile centrifugal fans, ideal for car parks with significantheight restrictions, especially thoserequiring a unidirectional system forclearance of air pollution and smoke.
More function – less consumption
12
Energy efficiency
As the world tries tocombat and halt globalwarming, the focus onenergy consumption and its‘carbon footprint’ increases. If we can use less, thatfootprint will be smaller. At Fläkt Woods, we areconstantly applying ourtechnological skills andexperience to the continuingdrive for greater efficiencyand reduced energy wastein order to minimise theenvironmental impact.
Energy efficiency is a core principle ofour fan design. Environmental concernsare not the only factor. The problem ofescalating energy costs is a significantadditional incentive.
So our development focus is alwaysfirmly on two principal goals:
Delivering the same (or better)functions, while reducing theamount of power a fan needs
Enabling it to operate onlywhen needed
Within our total range, we can now offermotor efficiencies up to 97% and motorpower factors of 0.9 and above.
These are all reasons why you can relyon Fläkt Woods to help you comply withnew or updated legislation, or solve aspecific building requirement. With ourLife Cycle Costing assessments,we can ensure that both energyconsumption and running costs arereduced to a minimum.
Fan options for extra efficiency

Principles of extraoperational efficiency
More efficient solutions can alsobe achieved by recognising – andavoiding – factors that contribute tohigher motor power requirements.
For example, run and standbyapplications in series are morepower-hungry than fans placed in parallel. That’s because, with parallel placement, damper loss is less than idling fan loss, making it the preferred installation toreduce system resistance.
We do recognise that parallel positioningmay not always be possible, and thatsystems need to be tailored to fit therequirements of each installation.
Nevertheless, by drawing on FläktWoods’ extensive experience, fanselections can be optimised for anysituation – typically with smaller motors, lower noise levels, reduced SFPs andless power consumed.
Achieving lowest SFPs(watts/litre/second)
No fan can run at 100% total efficiency:some power is needed to deliver itsfunction. However, the primary objectiveis to minimise the ratio of power tovolume flow rate – using less power todeliver more volume flow rate.
Recent Building Regulation updatesnow include SFP values, and applyto both new and existing buildings.
For new buildings, these regulationsnow specify that SFP values shouldnot exceed 2.5 for central systemsincorporating energy recovery, andno more than 1.8 for those withoutenergy recovery heating or cooling.

Intelligent control – matching needEnergy efficiency
Mechanical ventilationshould only be providedwhen it is actually required– delivered when demanded.Otherwise, by definition, thesystem operation is a wasteof energy and resource.
That’s why, at Fläkt Woods, we’vedeveloped increasingly intelligenttechnology. Systems that can takeresponsibility for recognising whenthe need is there – or when systemrequirements change – and reactaccordingly to maintain peakoperating conditions.
The goal of this advanced Fläkt Woodstechnology is simply stated: optimumperformance with minimum runningcosts while providing full functionality.
Delivering demand-controlledventilation
Our iFan intelligent fan systems alwaysdeliver performance tailored to theneeds of the moment within the buildingspace concerned – whether public, commercial or residential.
This advanced ventilation can thereforehelp maintain a better, more comfortableindoor environment while reducingenergy usage and running costs tothe minimum necessary.
It does so using sophisticated controlsthat are constantly monitoring andreacting to changes in its operationalenvironment.
15
Commissioning iFan units
Commissioning is fast and simple. Each system features plug and play lowvoltage sensor and switch connectors, and a plug and socket connectorbetween the ICU and iFan.
The ICU is then programmed with themaximum demand and operationalconditions that are to be monitored. This control strategy is determined bythe requirements of the installationdesign for the building environment.
Inverter drives:qualifying for tax breaks
Selecting systems and equipmentdesigned to reduce energy consumptioncan save money in other ways.
Installation of approvedinverters can meanEnhanced CapitalAllowance (ECA) taxbreaks are available. These offset your investment againsttaxable profits, and thereby helpreduce payback timescale for the plant.
iFan integralcontrol specifications
The intelligent controls that areintegral to iFan operation include:
Function– Auto changeover facility(Run & Standby mode)
– Duty sharing(Run & Standby mode)
– Run-on timer– Speed controller
Performance– Improved SFP values in normalventilation mode
– Fan operation varies in responseto input signals: from maximumto trickle or stop
Set-Up– Integration with BuildingManagement System (BMS)if required
– Remote monitoring availability– Low voltage sensors/switches
While each iFan is effectively astand-alone system, it can operateas part of the building controlsystem when linked into the BMS.The Intelligent Control Unit (ICU) is atits heart, and this can be programmedfor various environmental conditions –either via automatic or manual(user) control.
As well as receiving and acting onsensor inputs, the ICU incorporatesan LED display for set-up, operationand maintenance. This enableseasy monitoring of running times, fan speeds and other operationaldata. It can also indicate faultsor service intervals.
