This dance is a Western term for traditional Middle
Eastern dance styles.
Is a misnomer as all parts of the
body are involved in the
dance, the most important are the
hips.

Was originally danced by women
for women, to demonstrate or ease
childbirth.

Belly dance was originated in Northern Africa and was spread by Caravans to other
parts of the Middle East

Another theory claims that belly dancing
originated in Ancient Babylon introduce by
Adnanite Arabs.
COSTUME…
The most associated with belly dance is the bedlah. This costume
includes:
A fitted top or bra A fitted hip belt
Skirt or harem pants

SHIMMY
A shimmering vibration of the hips. This vibration is created
by moving the knees. Shoulder shimmy is also an important element of belly
dance.

highlights the beauty and flexibility of the
dancer.

Basic move. Helps alternate the weight on
