MATTHEW JOHN HEDGES PERSONAL
Address Berlin, 10405
I am twenty-four years old and have recently completed one year of work in industry at Anne Lampen Architekten, Berlin. I hope to continue towards my aspiration of becoming an Architect by starting my masters in Sept 2013.
I moved to Berlin because I was accepted onto the Leonardo da Vinci programme.
During this year I have been given a surprising amount of responsibility and autonomy over my projects. I have worked closely with my collegues who have mentored me along the way. The majority of my work has consisted of concept design to realisation for planning permisison, clients and presentations.
The highlight of the professional experience to date has been working on competitions as part of a team. The challenge created a positive working collabiration within the office that resulted in dynamic thinking, innovative design development and a high quality of output.
Since spending my third year of study in Milan taking part in the ERASMUS exchange programme I have developed an ambition to further my career.

Final Year Project: ‘Salisbury Wool School’
The project sees the revival of the wool industry which was once predominant within the city of Salisbury. The design sees to create a ‘new street’ within the chequer where education meets exhibition, wool making and selling garments. The concept developed an architectural language; a weave made of warp and weft threads.

5_Wool School Salisbury
_Final year project proposes a new fashion college.
_Reintroduces the wool ‘industry’ into the heart of Salisbury’s iconic historical chequer core.
_The concept developed an architectural language; a weave made of warp and weft threads.
_The building is a space that knits together exhibition and education with wool making and garment retail.
_ September 2011 - June 2012
_Finding a concept
_The concept was to create a weave of programmes that interrelate as threads do in garments. One solid and one translucent, one permanent and the other changeable.
_ The building is to act like a loom, a machine in motion, constantly adapting and producing fabric.
_Developing the weave
_The building acts as a ma-chine for wool making. The students are educated within the building whilst making garments and selling them.
_The building acts as a live exhibition with the ground floor being a shared space for the public.
_The Loom
_Ground floor in Motion
_The ground floor oscillates with the tides of people and their needs. The centre of the site acts as a new street that draws in the public and is the centre of the school where the two can meet.
_The facade controls light, ventilation and sound levels. It achieves this through the layering of rotating polycarbonate panels, folding glass planes and sliding porous curtains.
_Temporal space
_The design of the main building is to act as a convayorbelt of wool, taking it from a raw product to a finished garment, whilst educating the visitor or student about the process and how to design.
_The building transforms at night. The catwalk platform rises out of the ground and the translucent walls act as a beacon to the city.

7_Homes in the sky Manchester city centre
_This project comprised of three parts; a precedence dwelling study, project concept and overall design and apartment realisation in detail.
_The concept was to create a space for families to live within the city centre of Manchester as there is a lack of families within the core. This can be achieved through a new prototype house that can be stacked as a high density building.
_ March 2009 - June 2009
