In this paper I discuss my use of

ctional literature alongside empiricaldata in my research on ‘Western’ student

teachers’ intercultural learning from short studyvisits to South India. I highlight the signicanceof language and text in this research and argue that ction and ‘real’ data both provide faithfulrepresentations of reality. The use of ction promotesa plurality of thinking that helps prevent stereotypingemerging from people’s adherence to a ‘singlestory’ about a place and its people. In doing so I

argue that a consideration of ction helps learning towards a deeper place with the potential for

 this to be transformative.

In his paper I discuss my use o ficional lieraurealongside empirical daa in my research on ‘Wesern’ suden eachers’

inerculural learning om shor sudy visis o Souh India. I highligh he significanceo language and ex in his research and argue ha ficion and ‘real’ daa boh provide

aihul represenaions o realiy. Te use o ficion promoes a pluraliy o hinking hahelps preven sereoyping emerging om people’s adherence o a ‘single sory’ abou a place and is people. In doing so I argue ha a consideraion o ficion helps learning

owards a deeper place wih he poenial or his o be ransormaive.
