Personal Presentation

Margarita Leonova

Significant educational experiences

Studio experiences / Open ended projects High school art

class Summer studio

immersion program at Colorado College

Junior year housing studio

Teachers who cared and challenged me High/intimidating

standards Negative

reinforcement with final reward

Working outside my comfort zone

Being in an “exclusive” environment where every student had to compete to get there

Early years…

Having foreign parents who thought the American education system was not rigorous enough

Learning the Russian elementary school curriculum along side American curriculum in case my parents chose to go back

High school…

Art class/competitions/comissions Longer projects – had to do many assessments for IB

program to get diploma Summer programs college prep that I got into Being editor of high school news paper

College

Studio experiences especially housing studio

Human event and other discussion classes

Developing a thesis project

Coming to ASU…

To be perfectly honest I came here because of the full ride ASU gave me and my parents didn’t have money to pay for the other schools I got into

Was hopeful about the Honors College but didn’t have very high expectations

Unfulfilled experinces

Would like experiences with implementation of studio projects – design/build studio

Would like experience working at a firm Would like to have been more involved

in extra curriculars (scheduling difficult with 2 majors)

Would like more leadership experience

Could IW help?

Allowing me to take my studio experiences further into implementation

Networking to get internship

Aspirations

Would like to run a sustainable design and construction consulting firm

Contribute towards making the zero energy home affordable

Research question

How can zero energy buildings be implemented on a large scale, eventually completely dominating the built environment?

Research question

Resources:Visits to case study buildingsClasses that provide a through

understanding of building envelopes, passive cooling/heating techniques, energy generating systems that can be implemented on site

Interdisciplinary teamFunding for small scale implementation

Deliverables

Conceptual design Computer modeling of different schemes Construction documents and spec sheets for

products Implementation Efficiency testing Improvement proposal

Most important IW content

Methods of implementation/construction

Launching IW orgaizatoin

Near term: Buildings a critical capacity of

students Networking with other ASU

groups by sending ambassadors

Establishing a database of resources and tools available at ASU and how they can be reached

Creating a database of competitions available throughout the school

Long term: Building relationships with

businesses Acquiring funding to run IW

competitions Integrating IW with school

curriculum Expanding to other schools

Events

Presentations by guest speakers who have followed an IW-like path to achieve success

Meetings with other ASU clubs/organizations Small scale challenge activities, IE egg

exercise from Fail Seminar Meeting with professors about their research

and how members of IW can be involved Training sessions for low and mid level tools

Challenges

Achieving a critical capacity of members

Accommodating for diversity IE speakers that will be interesting for everyone but also specific

Funding for students who want to pursue topics in which competitions might not be as common
