Pattern-making

From the basic construction to the individual designed garment.

Introduction

The goal of this course is to develop anoriginal design, create a custom-madepattern and tailor a perfect-fitting garment.

The course will cover an introduction topatternmaking, measuring and development of a custom-made basic pattern,

altering a designed pattern based uponone's own creative idea and tailoring adesigned garment with the perfect fit.

• An introduction of the history of patternmaking

• Mass production of change fabrics, patterns and the fit

• What are the benefits of a tailormade garment?

• The architecture of the body

Basic Pattern Part

• Taking measurements • Introduction of measuring

regarding bodypostures, silhouette and individual requests

• Construction of a basic custom-made pattern on paper

• Homework: sewing a first sample of canvas fabric

Fitting and Corrections

• Fitting the canvas sample• Find and correct mistakes on

the sample• Transfer all corrections from

the sample to the paper pattern

• Homework: Fine drawing of the corrected paper pattern (3 pieces)

Alterations Part 1

• Tutorial of Alterations• Re-positioning of darts and

seams• Adjust length• Shape the collar• Cuffs, zippers and buttonlines• Homework: Create an original

design

Alterations Part 2

• How do I have to change my basic pattern to develop my customised design pattern?

• Drawing, cutting and modelling on the sample, fitting the garment

• Homework: Fine drawing of designed paper pattern (1piece)

Final Pattern Part 1

• Finish the design pattern to a final pattern for the cut:

• Buttons or zippers?• Seam allowance, bias or

straight cut• Pockets, decorative elements

(seams, lace, embroidery, print)

• Homework week: Tailoring of canvas sample from final pattern

Final Pattern Part 2• Fitting the canvas sample• Find and correct mistakes on the

sample• Transfer all corrections from the

sample to the paper pattern

• Homework week: Fine drawing of corrected pattern (1 piece)

• selection of fabric, buttons/zippers, yarn, decorative elements for the final garment.

Final Pattern Part 3

• Cut of final pattern • Plan for tailoring• Tacking and preparation for

tailoring• Styling: consultation for shoes,

accessoires and the final outfit

• Homework week: Tailoring the final garment
