Metro South Health
On behalf of the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Organising Committee, we warmly welcome you to the 56th Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) Health Symposium, to be held from 1–3 August 2016.
As the flagship event for the PAH, one of Australia’s leading hospitals, the 2016 symposium promises to deliver an exciting program featuring expert clinician-researchers presenting leading advances in treatment, panels discussing the hot topics of their specialities, and the PAH-TRI Research Awards and Poster Exhibition—recognising next generation discoveries to influence the clinical space.
In November 2015, the PA Hospital became Australia’s first public digital hospital, heralding a revolution in the way healthcare is delivered in Queensland. Becoming a digital hospital has put the PAH at the forefront of healthcare innovation and technology, fostering a culture of optimisation, ongoing innovation and improved healthcare amongst all clinicians, researchers, nurses and staff.
The 2016 PAH Health Symposium will enable you to connect your brand with leading research undertaken at the PA Hospital, provide a platform to raise your company profile in association with key clinical areas, and stimulate discussion of the current trends and challenges for the commercialisation of research.
Over the three-day event, there will be numerous opportunities to connect with leading clinicians and researchers from PAH, TRI and other facilities. You are invited to network with attendees during catering breaks and social events, and pre/post event.
The 2016 symposium promises to be an outstanding combination of first-class content and world-renowned attendees, we hope your organisation can join us.
Sincerely
Professor Ken Ho MD, FRACP, FRCP (UK) Chair, PAH Health Symposium Chair, Centres for Health Research, Princess Alexandra Hospital Professor of Medicine, University of Queensland and Adjunct Professor, Queensland University of Technology

Following the PAH becoming Australia’s first, large-scale digital hospital in November 2015, the 2016 PAH Health Symposium theme is Healthcare in the Digital Age.
Central to the program is this year’s International Fellow, Dr Thomas Payne of the University of Washington (UW). Medical Director of UW Medicine IT Services since 2000, Dr Payne is Associate Professor of Medicine, and Adjunct Associate Professor in Health Services and Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education. Leading the installation of the Veterans Administration CPRS electronic medical record at VA Puget Sound in Seattle—for which VA Puget Sound was awarded the 2000 Nicholas E Davies CPR Recognition Award—Dr Payne will illustrate how embedding digital technology can make hospital and health care safer, more efficient and effective while enhancing the capability of undertaking research and evaluating outcomes.
The symposium will highlight:
• translational research and partnerships across health disciplines;
• improved and more cost-effective treatments for cancer, trauma, inflammation, mental health and chronic diseases;
• rehabilitation in the hospital care setting;
• educational sessions integrating health service with smart e-applications and digital technologies;
• evidence and innovation in practice;
• symposia lead by experts in research techniques.
The symposium will be augmented by a multidisciplinary program of oral and poster presentations—awarding the best basic, medical, surgical, nursing and allied health research with the prestigious PAH-TRI Research Awards and Poster Exhibition.

A strong history
The PAH Health Symposium—previously known as “PAH Week” among staff—has evolved to be the flagship event of the annual PAH Week. Celebrating its 56th year in 2016, it is Queensland’s longest running health related conference.
The symposium provides a platform for international and national experts from a variety of clinical professions to present advancements in research and clinical practice to staff. The symposium encourages clinicians from within PAH to proudly showcase their work amongst colleagues and provides valuable networking opportunities with colleagues, staff and industry representatives.
“The 2016 PAH Health Symposium will enable you to connect your brand with leading research undertaken at the PA Hospital, provide a platform to raise your company profile in association with key clinical areas, and stimulate discussion of the current trends and challenges for the commercialisation of research.”Professor Ken Ho, Chair, PAH Health Symposium
This format promotes innovative and quality care for patients, and improvements in staff training and culture.
Over the years, the PAH has acquired international status in liver and kidney transplantation, melanoma treatment, laparoscopic surgery, gout treatment, cardiac disease management and vaccination for cervical cancer. The symposium provides an opportunity to discuss these advancements and build on them for the future.
