1. Introduction to the packing problem
Situation • Packing of a lot of different products into a few standard cartons / boxes
Issue • How can the products of a customer order be packed optimally?
Problem
• Manual / intuitive selection of the packing materials
• Choice of too small cartons
• Choice of too big cartons
Goal
• Saving of packing material costs and packing time
• Reducing freight costs
Solution
• Use of an Packing Proposal automatically created by the SAP Extended Warehouse Management System

2. Functional Description
*) Best Fit Decreasing using largest bins, at the end repack to smallest possible bins
Packing Algorithm
One Dimensional
Basis Heuristic
BFDLR*
Two Dimensional Components
Position Algorithm
Combined Packing Check

BFDLR is based on the Products and Packaging Materials
1. Volume Capacity
2. Weight Capacity
The products are packed in:
1. Biggest Packaging Material
2. Products sorted by decreasing volume
3. Carton with the smallest remaining volume
that can contain this product
4. New carton if such carton does not exist
Repacking at the end of the packing
Check each carton if the contained products also fit
in a smaller carton. If it fits, repack.

Two dimensional heuristic components
1. Position Algorithm
Determine the number of products
in the same vertical orientation
2. Combined Packing Check
Can currently processed product be packed
together with already packed products in a carton?
Consideration of length, width and height

2. Functional Description
Position Algorithm:
Determination of the number of products in the same vertical orientation
• Determination of remaining rooms and packing in one vertical orientation

2. Functional Description
Combined Packing Check:
Can the actually processed product be packed together with the products that are
already in that carton?
- Combined Packing Check based on volume, weight and dimensions
- If Combined Packing Check fails,
place currently processed product into another / a new carton

3. Implementation of the packing algorithm
Combination of one and two dimensional solution components:
One Dimensional Basis Heuristic: BFDLR
Two Dimensional Components
Result:
Assignment of product quantities to a carton
NOT an exact instruction how to place these
products within one carton

3. Implementation of the packing algorithm
Additional features of the packing algorithm:
Upright Only Flag
• Some products can only be packed in an upright position
Compression Factor
• Some products can be compressed so that their volume is reduced
Unusual dimension
• Products with unusual dimensions are considered (e.g. mailing tubes)

3. Implementation of the packing algorithm
• The Packing Proposal Determination is executed at the end of the Warehouse Order Creation
• Implemented within Consulting Solution
Outbound process
• Repacking on a Workcenter to build best shipping Handling units
Packing Workcenter
• Available with EWM 7.02
• Determination logic of Planned Ship HUs during Cartonization Planning
Cartonization
Planning
Result
• Packaging materials that shall be used
• Assignement of products and their quantities to the PMs

4. Solution and Features
Proposes which products should be packed in which packing materials
Runs in background during the creation of the warehouse order
Solution can easily be activated for each warehouse order creation rule
Considers different Units of Measure. (e.g. different weight unit of the packing material and the product)
Allows to flag products to be packed upright only
