SEESA held our second, and now
officially annual, Pride Sock Hop on
June 15. DJ Peaches made a rare
Edmonton appearance and spun an
evening of great music spanning
four decades. We’re fairly certain we
were the only seniors centre to be
rockin’ out to AC/DC just before
11 pm. Thank you to all who
attended. Wasn’t it a blast? And
special congratulations to our first
ever Pride Queen: her Imperial,
Sovereign Majesty, Empress XXXI
Southern Comfort who, by the way,
entertained us with a performance
of “Man I Feel Like a Woman”.

President’s Message Summer has finally arrived. I will be spending
a couple of weeks in the Maritime Provinces
and am really looking forward to it. My sister,
who lives in Antigonish, planned our itinerary.
My sister-in-law made all the accommodation
arrangements and all I have to do is show up.
What’s not to like!
Summer, a time to relax and enjoy – the
weather, your garden, your yard, family and
friends. Whether you go away or stay in
Edmonton, take the time to appreciate each
day because we know it won’t last.

President

Kim’s Korner Thanks to all our
friends and members that
save Canadian Tire money for
us. Steve and I recently went
to CT to purchase a new weed
trimmer for SEESA, we saved
an additional $38.00. When we think about
the whole budget of SEESA this does not
seem like much, however every penny counts
and is appreciated. We accept the paper CT
money at the Front Desk. As an alternative
you can just give SEESA’s phone number at
the store and we can use it that way—Thanks!
We have updated our policy for new
members: starting July 1, 2019 first time
SEESA members can join for the rest of 2019
and all of 2020 for $40. This opens up
opportunity for new members to enjoy
summer programming.

much to the gardening
volunteers for keeping
us in beautiful blooms

As summer reaches its peak, we do
notice a decrease in attendance at clubs and
classes but we are still here. Please come on
in for a coffee, some lunch, or for a slice of
those tasty home made loaves. If it is too hot
outside come and use our air conditioned
Fitness Centre. We have many summer
options for fitness classes as well.
Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Coffee & Chat with Kim
Wednesday, July 17 at 2 pm
In the “Cozy Corner” of the cafeteria.
Kim is available to answer questions and discuss the recent price increases for
programs. Plus she’s buying the coffee and snacks! Please come. If you can’t we will
attempt a live stream on our Facebook page.
Golf Tournament Anyone? The 40th Anniversary Committee would like
to find out how many members would be
interested in attending a Golf Tournament
in either June or July of 2020.
Our goal is to create a fun day of golf at the
Rundle Park Executive Par 3 course with a
banquet if desired. Please call the front desk
prior to July 25 at 780-468-1985 so we can
get an idea of how many people might be
interested. This tournament will be open to
family and friends. Cost to be confirmed
once we have an idea of numbers.
SEESA GETS CLEANED August 18—September 2
It’s that time of year again where we pitch in to ensure each of our areas is cleaned up so they
are free of clutter and dust!
The GYM, KITCHEN, CAFETERIA, and PROGRAMMING ROOMS will be closed with no Clubs or Classes taking place.
Each room will have cupboards and storage areas gone through
and will be wiped down.
Club and Class participants will be needed to help with the cleaning of the rooms. If your group is not represented, we cannot guarantee all supplies will be saved and put back in storage. What may be a treasure to your group may be unnecessary to a volunteer cleaning out that area.
Your participation will ensure that your equipment and supplies are still there when
you go looking for them.
Please let Peggy know if you will volunteer to work with the staff to ensure your Club or Class have a safe, clean area to come back to in September.
The office will be open during this time from 8:30 am—4:30 pm daily.
SUMMER BADMINTON NOTICE The Summer Program Guide has

Summer Programs
It’s Summer time once again! Programs will
continue over the Summer months, just not
at quite the hectic pace we’re used to in the
other seasons. Come over and check out
what is taking place, stay fit and active this
summer!
Our Fall Registration will
take place in conjunction
with our Open House on
Thursday, September 5,
2019. When considering
what classes to take or
what clubs to join, please be conscious of the
number of program guides that are taken.
During our busy months we can print 1200
copies! If you need one please help yourself
and consider sharing with a friend. The other
options are to go on our website at
www.seesa.ca and look at the guide there or
while you’re at SEESA look through the
guides we have available here. Registration
Forms are available at the front desk so you
can pick one up and fill it out all while at the
centre. This will help save a lot of paper.
Costs of all things eventually go up and
SEESA is no exception. We have charged the
same price for our classes for many years
and now need to look at the reality of paying
instructors and replacing equipment.
Beginning Summer of 2019 our hourly
charge for classes will increase by $.50 to
$6.00. For a 12 week class you will now pay
$72.00 instead of $66. We are also adding a
$5 per session equipment fee for all classes.
This amount will go directly to replacing
equipment as needed.
Enjoy everything this summer has to offer.

CARPET BOWLING IS BACK

SENIORS HOME SUPPORTS PROGRAM
- SHSP -
Tis the season to ‘make hay while the sun shines’ and enjoy all the fun and sun that we can handle before we have to hibernate again. It’s time to open up the windows, let the sunshine and fresh air in. Also a good time to get some of those deep cleaning items off the list. Here is a suggested list of things that are best done while the outside temperature is more hospitable:
Wash windows and screens to let the sun in and be able to see the lovely trees and flowers
Trim large tree branches, especially ones that rub on the edge of your roof, eaves or could damage electrical wires
Clean eaves troughs of leaves and debris. Repair if needed to protect the life of your shingles
Check caulking around windows and doors and seal any cracks that mice can enter
Clean dryer vent and exhaust ducts
Touch up paint and/or clean siding on the outside of the house or fences
Check outdoor faucets and taps for leaks
Check property’s grading for low spots where water can pool and go into your basement
Check decks, fences, patios, outside stairs and railings for rot or cracks that make them unsafe
Clean out the garage, attic, basement and declutter if needed
And here is a helpful hint about ceiling fans. In order to push the air down and keep your home nice and cool, change the direction of your ceiling fan to turn COUNTERCLOCKWISE.
Need help? Inside or outside, we have the screened and vetted service providers waiting for your call.
Don’t put it off. Summer will be over before we know
it and service providers are booking up quickly.
Call me, Deborah, at 780-468-1985 ext 260 or email

Outreach News
There was an interesting article in the
Edmonton Journal on May 27, 2019, titled
“Don’t Go It Alone”. It discussed supports
needed for seniors experiencing isolation and
loneliness. These are some of the highlights
from the article.
Loneliness is not fixed by being around
people. The quality of the relationships
between the people makes the
difference.
There are different degrees of loneliness
– sometimes lonely and always lonely.
Loneliness may motivate a person to seek
out and develop relationships with others.
Loneliness has also been shown to
contribute to poor health.
There are different types of loneliness,
such as “emotional loneliness”, when
someone experiences a lack of close
relationships; “social loneliness”, when
someone doesn’t have satisfying
interactions with family members, friends,
neighbours or others in the community;
“collective loneliness”, when someone
does not feel valued by the broader
community; and “existential loneliness”,
when someone believes his or her life
lacks meaning or purpose.
Causes of loneliness need to be
acknowledged before loneliness can be
reduced or eliminated. Rejection by others,
whether real or perceived; relationships that
have become distant, or lack former
closeness; hearing loss without intervention;
loss of mobility or loss of driving; and
bereavement may each be a cause of
loneliness. Each cause requires a different
approach to help reduce the loneliness or
isolation.

Kitchen News: Going Green
We are increasingly reminded of the impact that single use plastics/Styrofoam have on our environment. We are trying to do our part. To date, we have switched to biodegradable paper plates and soup containers. We have replaced plastic coffee stir sticks with wood. We are buying more in bulk to reduce over packaging.
Moving forward, we want to switch to using thermoses for most of our coffee cream, we want to stop buying bottled water and urge members to bring a refillable bottle, and where possible, cut down on the use of plastics wherever possible.
We have to consider each change carefully before implementation to consider the health and safety of our members. Working together, we can make a difference.
September 7, 2019
12 pm—7 pm
SEESA has been asked to
provide 50/50 volunteers for this event. We are looking to provide 16
volunteers over two 31/2 hour shifts. If this is
something that interests you please let Melanie know. We will be availing our parking lot space as a park and ride area for artists. Also, we
have been asked to provide 20 of our SEESA benches for the day. These benches will provide much needed resting spaces for art walkers and will also be for sale at the
site. Our own SEESA Art Club will also be setting up a display at the event. Some very exciting community
opportunities.
See you there!
We are still looking for gift cards to be used as door prizes for our wonderful volunteers for the appreciation event. If you have a gift
card floating around the house that you won’t be using or a little money to donate to
purchase one, please drop them off at the front desk.

Portrait Day at SEESA On June 4 we hosted professional photographer Samantha
Hjalmarson and students from MC College, who looked after hair
and makeup, to help our members look their best for a professional
portrait sitting. It was a wonderful, fun day that had everyone looking
absolutely beautiful.
Samantha and her assistant, Ben, transformed the Edmonton room
into a portrait studio. They volunteered approximately 12 hours each to ensure the
equipment was set up right and the lighting was perfect to take the
most natural photos they could capture.
There were 10 artists here from MC College. These students
volunteered their time as part of their curriculum and had a great
time visiting with members while touching up their hair and makeup.
Both groups had a great day working with everyone at SEESA and
have offered to do it again!
A huge thank you goes out to both these groups and all the members
that took part in our first ever Portrait Day! Keep an eye on future
newsletters and at the centre for more events like this to take place in
the coming months. Thanks again to our volunteers Samantha
Hjalmarson, her assistant Ben, and MC College. We couldn’t have
done it without you!

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION—AUGUST 14TH This is my last column before the big event in August. I am so excited!! All of the staff and I
have been hard at work making so many ideas come to life. The fun one that I’ve been working on lately is the new name tags to recognize those who have put in an
extraordinary amount of time: Bronze for over 150 hours; Silver for over 300 hours; and Gold for over 500 hours. We wouldn’t be able to open our doors without all of our amazing volunteers, whether they put in 2 hours or 200 hours. I feel that recognition is so important for keeping people involved. The next exciting step is getting the invitations ready. The hours will be finalized July 15th. I will be putting out the invitation list shortly after that. In order to be invited, you will need to have entered at least 25 hours of volunteer time into MySeniorCenter. For more information, please see page 5 of this newsletter or the posters around the centre. If you are not eligible to attend the appreciation event, I have a few special ideas for you as well.
OPPORTUNITY FORMS UPDATE The reminders have been put on profiles and the forms are pouring in. The initial audit is nearing completion. Thank you to our gals at the front desk for helping with this project.
BY THE NUMBERS: In May, 2244 hours were scanned by 175 volunteers. Please ensure that you are not entering your hours in lumps that cover multiple months. If you have missed hours that should have been entered in a previous month, please let me know and I can enter them manually into the system for you.

Thank you for not wearing fragrance
The chemicals in fragrances give some
people asthma, headaches, nausea, or

Please avoid perfumes or aftershave when attending our centre as you may be near people who are sensitive to fragrance. If

June’s Answer: A sundial has the fewest moving
parts of any timepiece. Which has
the most?
Answer: an hourglass
Dear Santa,
We know that this is typically your off season
and we hate to bother you while you are on
vacation (maybe), but SEESA is short of it’s
$10,000 Bright Lights goal and desperately
needs a communication upgrade. Currently,
not all our program rooms can hear when
there is an announcement or when the “After
Hours” bell rings. Plus, with the addition of
new staff some telephones in the offices are
not capable of all the functions like
transferring a call or paging. We have grown
so much in this last decade that it is time for
a revamp.
We often hear or see the words “Give as We
Are Able” and we recognize that not everyone
is able to volunteer their time at our centre.
In fact, last year an amazing 25% of our
membership volunteered their time and
talents to help keep SEESA’s costs down.
What we need your help with, Santa, is to ask
our non-volunteering members to consider
reaching into their wallets to donate towards
the Bright Lights campaign. It doesn’t have to
be a big donation either (469 members
giving $10.75 each would make our target).
Of course we would be happy to accept larger
donations as well. For every donation over
$10 a charitable tax receipt will be issued.
We also have a pledge to match a donation
of $1000 if someone wanted to come
forward to do that. Can you help us make
Christmas in July happen?
Kind regards,
Elaun & the SEESA Staff

We are all Treaty People
Why do we Acknowledge Treaty 6?
Making a land acknowledgment is a small
but important first step in the reconciliation
process between Canada’s Indigenous
people and those who came later. As we
move further into the 21st century and place
so much emphasis on welcoming recent
newcomers to our country, it’s more
important than ever to look back and
acknowledge the early atrocities that we
committed against our nation’s original
inhabitants. We cannot truly celebrate being
Canadian until we recognize our history,
including the shameful parts we might rather
forget. Remembering to acknowledge the
inhabitants whose land we’ve built our lives
on is but one small thing we can do to
reconcile an ugly past with a hopeful future.

The Golden Gal Fundraising Fashion Show Celebrating 24 Carat Women on June 2, 2019
We are extremely pleased to announce that this event was a big success. We cleared around $1900 for SEESA and more importantly, the ladies had a great time!!!
Our door prizes were a $50 Gift Certificate to ALIA/TanJay and one to Paush Shoes purchased by the Generous Guys, an outfit by ALIA/TanJay, a hanging plant by Aspen
Greenhouse and a bag from Marina Chrapko of Avon. Everyone got a swag bag and chances to win the prizes donated by trade show participants. The 50/50 was $200.50 and was won
by Jeanette Fortier. It took 48 volunteers to run this event. Your help is invaluable.
Thanks to SEESA Generous Guys

The Little Town of Christmas Everybody in the little town of Christmas is friendly and funny and you'll meet them all, including an elf comedy team that is short in stature and long in laughter; Dancer, the reindeer with a whacky sense of humor; and a hilarious street corner Santa who is tested and almost bested by one tough little kid with a sticky sucker. You will have a chance to revisit old favorites such as "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and "A Christmas Carol”, updated and aimed for your funny bone ... so they may not be exactly as you remember. Throw in a wandering group of carolers with the sniffles, a missing reindeer, kids coming from skating practice, a singing contest and a vamp in a bar for an evening of holiday laughter and enjoyment you won’t forget soon.

Friend Of SEESA Showcase Inside-Out Chiropractic Center’s mission is to help its members live a life that lasts. We do this by recognizing that each person has been designed with a purpose to help better the lives of those around them when they can fulfill their calling in life. When health is compromised and an individual functions at a less than optimal level, the impact that person has on the lives they are connected to decreases.
Improper motion or position of the bones in your spine can irritate or even choke delicate nerves, interfering with the function of the tissues they control. It leads to interference in the nervous system resulting in a lack of optimal function in the body. Doctors of Chiropractic call this a vertebral subluxation complex or V.S.C.
Our focus is the detection and removal of V.S.C. which allows the power that made the body to heal the body with optimal flow. This in turn allows the body to adapt to the stressors we experience in our daily lives and enables the body to express health to the fullest.
We believe that everyone deserves to live a life free from interference; to have a body that is fully capable of experiencing life to his or her fullest potential. Inside-Out Chiropractic Center Located in The Legacy Center
