Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church
3710 Augusta Rd. † Greenville, SC 29605
July 16, 2017 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Sometimes the young altar servers will ask why we use incense at Mass. I reply, “It helps keep the head lice under control.” Not really. Using incense in worship is an ancient and practically universal custom. Incense of some kind is used in religions other than Catholicism, but our use of incense has its roots in the Hebrew religion. In the Book of Exodus the Lord gives the Hebrews instructions on how to make incense, and commands them to have an “altar of incense” in their tabernacle. We know that John the Baptist’s father Zechariah, who was a temple priest, was performing his duties at the “altar of incense” when the angel Gabriel appeared to him with the message of John’s miraculous birth. The burning incense was a reminder of the cloudy pillar which led the Israelites through the wilderness. It was also a symbol of the prayers of the faithful rising up to heaven. The prayers were like a “sweet fragrance” in the Lord’s nostrils. In the Book of Revelation we read that the angels before the altar burn incense which is the prayers of the saints rising up to the Lord. In Catholic worship incense is used to add solemnity and symbolism to our worship. The incense is also used as a way of blessing certain items for worship. Sacred images are blessed with incense, and incense is used as a sign of worship and prayer during processions and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Incense is also properly used at funerals to bless the mortal remains of our loved ones. Is it mandatory to use incense at Mass? Not always. We do so because it is a beautiful part of our sacred tradition as Catholics--a tradition that is rooted in sacred Scripture and connects us back through Catholic worship for the last two thousand years and even further back to the worship of the Hebrews in the Jerusalem temple and the tabernacle in the wilderness. This sign of worship points us back to the Old Testament worship and forward to the worship of heaven. It therefore connects our lives with the deeper and most mysterious elements of our faith. Your pastor, Fr. Longenecker
