The Parts of a Cell

Organelles

• Little cell structures that have specific functions

• Found in eukaryotes

Cell Membrane

• Cell’s security system

• Surrounds and protects cell

• Controls what enters and exits the cell

Cytoplasm

• Gel-like substance inside the cell

• Where cell processes (chemical reactions) occur

• It is 80% water

Cell Wall

• Tough structure that surrounds and protects plant cells

• Gives cells shape

• Made of cellulose

Nucleus

• Control center of the cell

• Contains directions for the entire cell

• DNA is found here

• Surrounded by a nuclear membrane

Chloroplast

• Green organelle • In plant cells• Photosynthesis• Captures energy from

the sun to make glucose (plant food)

Mitochondria

• Cell’s energy dam

• Stores and releases cell’s energy

• “Powerhouse”

Ribosome

• Protein factories

• Make proteins

• Some float freely in the cytoplasm, others are attached to the E.R.

Endoplasmic Reticulum

• Cell’s railroad track

• Moves materials around in cell

• Smooth - no ribosomes

• Rough – has ribosomes

Golgi Body

• Cell’s post office

• Sorts and packages proteins into vesicles

• Vesicles deliver substances in the cell and also attach to the cell membrane to release materials to the outside

Nucleolus

• Manufactures the proteins that make up the ribosomes

• Found in the nucleus

Lysosome

• Cell’s landfill

• Digests food molecules, cell wastes, and worn out cell parts.

Vacuole

• Temporarily stores food, water, and waste

• Rather large in plant cells

Cytoskeleton

• Framework for the cell

• Helps to maintain shape or change shape of cell

Levels of Organization

Tissue

• A group of cells working together to perform a particular function

Organ

• 2 or more tissues working together to perform a function
