PARTICIPATION IN THE DIVINE LITURGY
Please use the Divine Liturgy books that are found in the pew racks. These
books contain the Armenian text as well as the English transliteration and
translation in the second section.
For your convenience, the applicable page number in the burgundy Divine
Liturgy book is located above the right door by the Altar leading to the
Vestry. If assistance is needed, please ask a member of the Parish Council.
Please observe the “Arrows” in the new liturgy books. They indicate when
you should Stand, Sit or Kneel.
Parishioners are also encouraged to sing with the Choir, whose real purpose
is to lead the congregation in singing the hymns. Also join in the recitation
of the Creed which is found on pages 18 and 19 of the second section.
COLLECTION PLATE
To allow the opportunity for everyone to participate, the collection plate
will be passed after Holy Communion.
REVERENCE REQUIRED
Please be advised that, according to the tradition of the Armenian Church,
members of the congregation are strongly reminded to refrain from
walking in and out of the Sanctuary while services are in progress. You
are especially reminded not to do so during 1) the Chanting of the
Gospel (p. 17; 2) recitation of the Creed (Havadamk), (p. 18); 3) the
Chalice Procession, (pg.24-25); 4) the Hymn, “Der Voghormya,” (pg.
45); and 5) distribution of the Holy Communion (p. 49). Also, please do
not chew gum or cross legs during church services and we ask that
everyone kindly turn off all Cell phones and all other such electronic
devices prior to entering the sanctuary out of respect for the sanctity of our
services.

Bible Reading: The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John
Our Lord Jesus Christ: erceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force
to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by
himself. When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,
got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark,
and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea rose because a strong wind
was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw
Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat. They were
frightened, but he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they were
glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to
which they were going.

Commemoration of 150 Pontiffs participating in
the Ecumenical Council of Constantinople Saturday, January 24, 2015
During different periods of history the Ecumenical Church has faced various
problems of doctrinal, administrative and organizational nature, solutions to
which have been provided during the Ecumenical Councils. One of such councils
was the Second Ecumenical Council convened upon the order of the King
Theodosios in Constantinople, in 381.
As the result of Arian disputes a new heresy had appeared, the head and supporter
of which was Bishop Makedon of Constantinople, who denied the deity of the
Holy Spirit. The Ecumenical Council convened in Constantinople on that special
occasion, re-endorsed the definition of the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea and
stack for the formulation “One deity, three persons”.
Accepting the Ecumenical Council, the Armenian Apostolic Church
commemorates the memory of 150 Patriarchs participating in the Council.
Eve of the Fast of Catechumens Sunday, January 25, 2015
he Fast of Catechumens is peculiar only to the Armenian Church.
It begins three weeks before the Great Lent. In ancient times
people could eat only bread and salt during the fast of
Catechumens. On those days it was not allowed to celebrate Divine
Liturgy either.
The meaning of the Fast of Catechumens is the
purification of the five human senses from pagan
impurity. In the ancient Church there was a
custom to fast during five days before baptism.
St. Gregory the Illuminator ordered King
Tiridates and others to fast for five days before
baptism in order to get freed of the evil. That is
the reason also for fasting of Catechumens to be called “fast of salvation”
from the evil.
According to the tradition, the fasting of Catechumens was initiated by St.
Gregory the Illuminator in memory of the above-mentioned practice.
There are two explanations regarding the name of this feast.
It is called the fast of Catechumens:
1. As the precursor of the Great Lent, and
2. As the first Armenian fast.
On the fifth day of the fasting of Catechumens, on Friday, the
remembrance day of the Prophet Jonah is celebrated, but it is celebrated
not as the feast of Prophet Jonah, but as the memory of an example of
great repentance and abstinence which Jonah urged. At times, wrongly, the
fasting of Catechumens was called the fast of St. Sarkis, because the
Armenian Church celebrates the feast of St. Sarkis on Saturday following
the fast. In Middle Ages the Byzantine and the Georgian Churches blamed
the Armenian Church for the fasting of Catechumens, relating it to St.
Sarkis, to whom they ascribed sorcery. According to the testimonies of
Armenian medieval writers. Greek and Latin Churches also had the fasting
of Catechumens in ancient times.

Home Blessing at Christmas The Armenian Church is rich with meaningful family-centered traditions
which allows our individual families to be united with those of our entire
Church Body and becomes the link to our extended family; our forefathers.
One of these traditions is the Rite of Home Blessing, a very meaningful and
ancient practice of our people.
Customarily, the family would receive a special gift from the Parish Priest
during the forty days following Christmas and Easter at which time the
home would be blessed. In Armenian, this practice known as “DN
ORHNEK” points to some fundamental Christian values and truths.
Bread, water and salt are
presented by the Parishioner to
the Priest to be blessed. The
bread and water symbolize our
physical needs, the essentials for
sustenance of life and our
affirmation of the goodness of
God's creation. "God saw
everything that He had made and
behold, it was very good.” [Gen.1:31] Yet we tend to forget this basic
reality, carried away by trends that surround us, and social forces that
separate daily life from our faith and religious practice.
Salt symbolizes our spiritual life. Christ called His followers “The Salt of
the Earth” who through their faith, hope and love made life worth living and
God the goal and the meaning of their lives. We as followers of Christ are
called to be the same, to bring the teachings of our Lord into our home and
our lives as well as become His messengers of the Good News. By having
our homes blessed, we respond to God's love affirming His goodness with
thanksgiving.
The prayer uttered during this service “O Protector and Hope.” indicates the
Christian concept of stewardship, of being good caretakers of gifts entrusted
to us. The implication of this for our daily lives are many: taking care of the
environment, sharing and not wasting food, having respect for articles in our
use and care are our religious responsibilities also-they are not mere social
issues. The entire family should be involved in the preparation and
