Reasons to buy localSupport your local economy
Every year around this time, we begin thinking about theholidays and purchasing gifts. Every year we also havea special “Buy Local” edition of ChamberLink. We thinkabout keeping money local every day, but I guess it’s justmore fun to write about it when the stores are gettingdressed in their holiday finest. As I’ve been out lookingaround, making pictures and getting this edition ready, Inotice again how blessed we are to live in such a great, diverse community. Imagine if Dalton only had one ortwo large chain stores rather than a number of indepen-dently run small businesses. For me personally, that wouldnot be a place that I would enjoy living. It would be lesspersonal, and the shopping experience would be routine.Spending your money with local retailers helps keep thelocal economy alive. I love visiting with the local retailers
and finding out what they recommend, what trends tolook for and getting some helpful advice.I think about new ways to tell people to buy local and inthe past we have discussed how it affects our tax base, why the customer service is better or how it helps keepthe local workforce employed. I can talk about all ofthose things again, and in fact, read the EconomicDevelopment section later in this issue. I think you’ll besurprised. But instead of writing, I’m going to featuremore pictures of places that you can shop local.Remember it’s not just about the retail experience, but alsoeating in local restaurants and using local service people. If you haven’t already, think about what services you useand consider a switch. Every dollar you spend here inGreater Dalton will pay us all back in greater dividends.
Chamber Checks are redeemable at many local places, including The Sweet Spot in downtown Dalton.
Diplomat Ginger Luna (Sophie’s Place) admires a piece of art atMichael’s Fine Arts & Framing. Another great place to buy local!

Why It Pays to Keep Your TaxDollars in Greater Dalton
A penny saved may be a penny earned, but what is a dollar spent in GreaterDalton? Conversely, what is a dollar spent outside of Greater Dalton? As alocal resident, where you spend your money may not always cross your mind, but there are plenty of members in the community – your elected officials, business owners and merchant advocacy groups among them – who considerevery dollar being spent in Greater Dalton. Why all the fuss over your retail spending? Because every penny counts whenit comes to shopping local!Running the NumbersTake a look at your next receipt and the current local sales tax rate of 6.00%will be listed. If you make a sizable purchase, the local sales tax can reallyadd up. It won’t add up as fast as shopping in Tennessee however, as thesales tax there varies between 9.25% and 9.75% depending on the commu-nity. Besides paying more for your goods in Chattanooga, spending localsupplies needed revenue for our local governments.Local governments provide services to their residents such as roads, waterand sewer infrastructure, and fire and police protection. The revenue fromsales tax provides one avenue of funding for these services. Of course, salestax isn’t the only source of revenue for the cities of Dalton, Varnell, TunnelHill, Town of Cohutta and Whitfield County. Fees for services and propertytaxes by far make up the heftiest chunks of each community’s budget. Still, sales tax has the potential to make its mark, too.Once the State of Georgia takes its 4% of the sales tax, the community is leftwith 2% of each purchase. Currently, a local-option sales tax (LOST) accountsfor 1% and an education special-purpose local-option sales tax (ESPLOST)accounts for the other 1%. The current ESPLOST will expire at the end of2011, leaving a LOST and possibly a SPLOST for 2012. (Note: this was writ-ten before the November 8 referendum on a two year SPLOST.) Let’s take alook how quickly the 1% LOST can add up in one month:
For October, local governments collected almost $1.5 million in sales tax thatdirectly impacts their budgets. Imagine what that total could be if local resi-dents did all of their holiday shopping in Greater Dalton! So how about keeping these tax dollars local?! It simply makes dollars andcents to shop local. After all, you know what they say… every penny counts.
