2015 Oceania Track Cycling ChampionshipsWednesday 8th October - Saturday 11th October 2014Adelaide Super-Drome
On behalf of the Oceania Cycling Confederation and the Union Cycliste Internationale, I extend a hearty welcome to all athletes, team managers and staff, officials and volunteers to the Super-Drome in Adelaide, South Australia for the 2015 Oceania Track Championships. Over four exciting days from 8 – 11 October 2014, 150 outstanding athletes in Elite and U19 categories will be vying for 34 Oceania Titles.
Oceania’s dominant nations Australia and New Zealand have been long recognised among the top track cycling countries in the world. We are in for some red hot competition at the Super-Drome as these two powerhouses meet ‘head to head’ in the Oceania Track Championships, with many athletes coming off recent medal winning performances at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
For the first time, Oceania Champions will be awarded the Oceania Champions jersey, and the right to wear Oceania stripes throughout the season.
The Oceania Cycling Confederation sincerely thanks event organiser Cycling Australia and all
staff, support services and volunteers for their vital support to ensure the continuation of world class cycling in the Oceania region. I also acknowledge the continued support of cycling by the South Australian Government and its Office of Recreation and Sport.
To all athletes, I wish you all the best for what will be a most enthralling competition at the commencement of the 2014-15 Track season, in the build up to the 2015 Track World Championships and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Welcome from Tracey GaudryPresident of the Oceania Cycling Confederation Vice President, Union Cycliste Internationale

CHAMPIONSHIP OFFICIALS
SPRINT
The sprint is one of the oldest cyclingevents making its first appearance at WorldChampionships in Chicago in 1893. It is aclassic short distance event in which two ormore riders cover three laps. Only the final200 metres is timed and the winner is the firstacross the line. Sprinters must be strong andfast but the key to success is tactics. Suddenand dramatic changes in pace, standstillattempts and feints are typical ways to try andoutwit an opponent. Riders obtain a seedingthrough the qualifying 200 metre flying timetrial and from then on race head to head.
INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIAL
The time trial is a race against the clock withno room for error. The difference betweengold and silver can be as little as a thousandthof a second. The bike is locked in a startinggate and riders must time their first pedalstroke to match the gate release. From thestanding start they must quickly get up tomaximum speed and maintain it for thedistance.
KEIRIN
Keirin was created in the 1940’s and is theJapanese version of the traditional sprintevent. Up to seven riders compete over2000m. A special motorised bike called aderny leads the field for the first 5½ lapsstarting at 30km/h and bringing the ridersup to a speed of 50km/h (25km/h to 45km/hfor women). Cyclists manoeuvre for thebest position before the derny leaves thetrack. Then the battle of strength, speed andcourage begins.
TEAMS SPRINT
Two teams of three riders (two riders forwomen) race each other and the clock. The lead rider on each team must get out of thegate cleanly and bring the team up to speedas fast as possible. After one lap it’s the turn of the next rider to put in the effort and for the final lap only one rider remains.
INDIVIDUAL PURSUIT
The individual pursuit is an endurance eventand is conducted as a knock out tournament. The goal is to ride the fastest time overthe distance. The fastest two riders in thequalifying round race in the gold medal finaland the next two fastest contest the bronzemedal final. In qualifying all riders completethe distance to post a time but in the finalsif a rider overtakes their opponent they aredeclared the winner.
SCRATCH RACE
The scratch race begins with a massed startand the first rider across the line wins. Tacticsare important in this event, with enduranceriders keeping the pace fast and furious fromthe gun in an effort to eliminate the specialistsprinters, who in turn will try and shelterwithin the group to conserve their strength inthe final placings.
POINTS RACE
This is an event where the final placings aredetermined according to accumulated pointswon by riders during sprints or by takinglaps on their opponents. Points (5,3,2,1) areawarded to the first four across the line in the

GUIDE TO EVENTS
intermediate sprints, every ten laps and at thefinish. 20 points are given to a rider who lapsthe main field and any rider who drops a lapon the main field loses 20 points. At the endof the race if two or more riders are equal onpoints the places in the final sprint determinewho wins. Speed, endurance, concentrationand ability to read the race and react quicklyare all found in a successful points rider.
TEAMS PURSUIT
This is a true test of technique and teamwork.Four cyclists line up and their success relies on how well they work together. The rider on the front must keep the pace as high as possible but not ride so fast that they surge away from their team mates. The cyclists must ride as close as possible to the rear wheel of the rider in front of them to gain every possible aerodynamic benefit but make sure they don’t touch wheels. The riders swing up the track at the end of their ‘turn’ on the front leaving the next rider to set the pace. The time is taken on the front wheel of the third rider across the line.
MADISON
The Madison, or ‘Américaine’, is derivedfrom six-day-races which began in 1899 inNew York’s Madison Square Gardens. Teamscomprising two riders work together to amasssprint points or try to take a lap. Sprints areheld every twenty laps with points awardedfor sprints are 1st – 5pts, 2nd – 3pts, 3rd – 2ptsand 4th – 1pt sprints.
Only one member of the team is racing atany one time while his team-mate ridesaround the top of the track banking until itis his time to race. The race is conducted as
a‘tag team’ format where the racing rider musttouch his incoming team-mate to effect thechangeover. This is usually done by way ofa ‘hand sling’ where the racing cyclist grabshis team-mate’s hand and slings him into the race.
The team that covers the most laps is thewinner. If more than one team has riddenthe same number of laps they are placedaccording to points won. If there is a draw onlaps and points the order across the line in thefinal sprint decides the placings
OMNIUM
The omnium is made up of 6 events and is contested over two consecutive days.
The final classification is established as follows: the points accumulated by the riders over the first 5 events, on the basis of the points scale in force, are added up. During the 6th and final race, this total may increase or decrease according to the points won or lost by the rider. The winner is the rider who has the highest total of points at the end of the 6th event.
