Amendment 6 (V+I)= VI
• 666 • Think something bad• Even “bad" criminal people will get a
right to a trial by jury • (criminal cases only)
Your Rights Under the 6th Amendment:
Jury of “CHAPS”• Jury• “Confrontation”- compel adverse
witnesses to testify• Habeas Corpus (know charges against you)• Attorney• Public Trial• Speedy Trial
Your Rights Under the 7th Amendment:
• Rules of Common Law:
– If your civil suit comes to more than $20 you still have the right to a trial by jury.
Amendment 8 (VIII)Amendment 8 (VIII)• I “8” nothing• Number 8 looks like a paddle• No cruel and unusual
punishments!• This includes excessive bails and
fines• Guess what looks like an 8 too
This means…• No excessive bail can be imposed (relative
to crime committed)• No excessive fines imposed (relative to
crime committed)• No weird or torturous punishments
• 1780’s: no more burning at the stake…(they believed jail might reform criminals…hence the first
prison was opened in Phili.)
Amendment 9 (IX)
• In case we forgot any rights…

• Rights given to the people…us!
This means…
• Your rights are YOUR RIGHTS
• None of your rights can be taken away from you which are written in the Constitution.
• (except in times of war… Remember nothing is absolute)
