A wine described as Rhne-style imitates the great wines that
come from the area of southeastern France known as the Rhne
Valley. Just as a Bordeaux-style wine means a wine blended with
traditional grape varieties of the Bordeaux region primarily
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, for example,
the traditional grapes of the Rhne region make up a Rhne-
style wine. The Rhne Valley grapes are different from Bordeaux
grapes and therefore the wine styles are distinctly different, too.
Syrah, probably the most recognized Rhne grape, has grown
in popularity among American wine drinkers. Only about 10
years ago, Syrah was not in the top ten list of grapes planted in
California when ranked by acreage. Today, it is among the fastestgrowing varieties, challenging Merlot in terms of popularity
among wine drinkers.
Syrah is a late-ripening grape, able to grow well in both warm
and cool climates, and known for its depth of character and
potential for greatness. It has dense, dark fruit layers that can
explode with flavors of plum, blackberry, exotic spice and cocoa.
It has a tannic backbone to complement its bold fruit but is no
normally as tannic as Cabernet. I enjoy it as an alternative to
Cabernet Sauvignon, when Im eating game or beef prepared
with a rich sauce or gravy.
Other popular red Rhne grapes are Grenache and
Mourvedre, lesser-known than Syrah but very fine grapes that
are often used to blend with Syrah. In fact, Ive had some
California Grenache that had as much finesse and personality
Syrah, but finishes softer in the mouth. Grenache leans to ligh
berry characteristics of strawberry and raspberry, whereas
Mourvedre tends to have more blackberry flavor and a more
structured mouthfeel. These three grapes of the Rhne, whencombined in a California-style wine, have become so successfu
working together that they are sometimes referred to as GSM,
meaning a Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre blend.
When talking about Rhne-style wines, one name that alwa
is raised is Chteaneuf-du-Pape. This is perhaps the most
famous sub-region within the southern portion of Frances
Rhne Valley, a place where most wines are also blends of Syra
Grenache and Mourvedre grapes, although, officially, a total of
13 different Rhne grape varieties can be included in a wine
labeled as Chteauneuf-du-Pape. Styles range from layers of
elegant fruit in an understated, classic European wine style to
more robust and muscular approach that resembles a Californ
style.
Viognier, perhaps the most popular white grape of Rhne-
style wine can be very aromatic, like a bouquet of flowers, wi
a smooth peach theme. Interestingly, Viognier is frequently
blended with red grapes in addition to other white Rhne
grapes, like Roussanne and Marsanne, also both very aromatic
but with Roussane being the more structured of the two.

Along a winding country road, up an unpaved drive and past Gus, a big, friendly, chocolate lab, youll find one of the most unpretentious, down-to-earth tasting roomsaround. The Pope Valley, one of the California wine regions hidden treasures, is homthe Pope Valley Winery. This serene, bucolic setting offers a wine tasting experience fafar away from the ostentatious fare to be found at some of the more well-known winecountry destinations. Here, you will be treated less like a visitor and more like a frienTo reach the Pope Valley Winery requires a leisurely country drive that is, in itself, asignificant part of the experience. Winding through picturesque fields, undulatingvineyards and oak-studded hills, one gets the feeling of being transported back in timThe pace here is slower, more peaceful than the flurry and commotion found along thmain thoroughfares of the Napa Valley. Photo opportunities present themselves arounevery bend in the road.
A visit to Pope Valley Winery allows wine lovers to step back in time and experien40 acres of history. The bubbling sounds of Haus Creek can be heard as you roam thegrounds of this historic winery. The original farmhouse still graces the property, as weas a blacksmiths workshop, complete with the tools of the trade. The winery itself ishoused in a historic building that was designed; before electricity was brought to thesite. It was fashioned as a three-story gravitational flow winery with a hand-dug cave, allow the wine to flow from crusher, to press, to barrel.
The Pope Valley Winery was founded in 1897 by Ed Haus as Burgundy Winery &Olive Oil Factory. A century later in 1997, the Eakle family, purchased the historicwinery and gave it a new life as Pope Valley Winery. In 2009, the next generation ofEakles stepped in to continue building and furthering the familys vision for Pope ValWinery as a fine winemaking establishment. Currently siblings David Eakle as
winemaker along with consulting winemaker Shaun Richardson and Diana EakleHawkins as general manager are making great strides in bringing Pope Valley Wineto the next level.
Youll enjoy the drive there, but the true prize comes when you arrive at Pope ValWinery. This isnt just a pretty place; this is where some truly amazing wine is made.Pope Valley Winery produces high quality, handcrafted single varietal wines. Thewinerys vineyards include more than 80 acres planted to Sangiovese, CabernetSauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Zinfandel and Merlot. The rich, intense and flavorful wineare created by combining superior fruit and oak barrel aging in the century-old cave.
Visit Pope Valley Winery and experience more than 100 years of history. The winehas picnic grounds, a bocce ball court and a horse shoe pit for guests enjoyment as was cheese baskets for sale.

Napa Valley Winery hosts five artists in festivals 43rd year
In the spirit of Robert Mondavis belief that wine, food and thearts are an essential part of American life, the 2012 Robert Mondavi
Winery Summer Concert Series returns when O.A.R. takes the stage
at the winery on June 30. Multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and
actor Josh Groban will perform the final concert on July 21st
benefitting the The Napa Valley Schools Music and Art Programs and
his own Find Your Light Foundation. Margrit Mondavi founded this
annual concert series in 1969, quickly becoming an anticipated wine
country tradition.
Throughout the festivals 43-year history, more than $2 million in
proceeds has been raised for the Napa Valley Symphony, Napa Valley
Opera House and the Napa Valley Unified School District. Proceeds
from ticket sales of this years series will directly benefit the Napa
Valley Unified School District.
The festival begins June 30, with O.A.R.s Celebrating Fume
Blanc: An American Classic performance and a firework show.
O.A.R. has become popular throughout recent years for their deeply
personal lyrics and alternative rock edge. A portion of each ticket
sold for this concert will benefit The Heard the World Fund. The
organization helps support youth, education and sustainable
programs internationally. The festival continues on July 6 with the
Plain White Ts headlining the Celebrating the Bounty of Napa and
Local Sustainability concert. This two-time Grammy-nominated
band, known for their hit Hey There, Delilah, brings their heartfeltlyrics and sweet melodies. On July 7, the Spotlight on Oakville
concert features Natasha Bedingfield. Another Grammy-nominated
artist in this summers concert lineup, Bedingfield brings a soulful
voice and an upbeat European flair to the stage. Perhaps best known
for their hit Superman, Five for Fighting brings their smooth vocals
to the Winery on July 14 for the Hope in the Vineyard concert. City
of Hope is a national cancer research and treatment center, providing
patients with specialized care.
The summer concert series concludes July 21 with the Spotlight
on To Kalon performance by Josh Groban. Robert Mondavi Winery
is the perfect place to experience the musical genius of Josh Groban.
You can be a part of a world-class musical performance, watch the
moon rise over the vineyard, and enjoy wonderful wines, says Carl
Jaeger, Estate Director at Robert Mondavi Winery. Making music and
making wine are both artistic expressions and this performance
marks the beginning of a collaboration between Josh and the winery.
Josh will be in the studio for most of 2012 working on his next
album but his passion for food and wine drew him to this
opportunity to visit the Napa Valley. His show will be performed in
an intimate, stripped down configuration and will mark his only
Northern California performance this year.
The intimate concert, benefitting local Napa schools arts and
music programs, pairs nicely with Josh Grobans own Find Your Li
Foundation. Established in 2011, his foundation enriches the lives
young people through arts, education, and cultural awareness.
Groban believes that early exposure in the arts helps shape young
peoples lives, combined with the sobering reality that public schoo
arts programs are being dismantled in many communities has mad

With the goal of sharing our love for the arts with the localcommunity, we couldnt imagine a better collection of artists to
perform at this years festival, says Carl Jaeger, Estate Director at
Robert Mondavi Winery. The diversity of acts coupled with the
unique charities that will benefit from the concerts combines to br
evenings of world-class wine and entertainment, right here in our
backyard.
The Robert Mondavi Winery Festival started as a small venture
the arts, with tickets costing only $3 and drawing a modest crowd
400 attendees. Since its inception, the festival has hosted more tha
100 performers and now draws thousands every year. From the fir
performance by the Napa Valley Symphony, a guitar soloist, and thXoregos Dance Company, the festival has grown to showcase world
renowned jazz, R&B and pop artists. The Festival is a highlight of
summer season in the Napa Valley, bringing together wine, food,
music and the arts for beautiful evenings in the vineyards.
All performances begin at 7 p.m. and are held at the Robert
Mondavi Winery on Highway 29 in Oakville, Napa Valley. Ticket
prices vary by performance. For additional information and to

DANIELLE CYROT
St. Clement VineyardsBY MONICA L. DASHWOODDanielle Cyrot, winemaker for St. Clement Vineyards, has
made a name for herself in the beautiful wine country of Nap
Valley. Her academic background, international travels,
technical training and hands on experience defines her excell
winemaking techniques, producing over a dozen award
winning varietal wines today.
For Danielle, winemaking runs in her blood. Her great-
grandfather owned the Cyrot vineyard in Burgundys prestigio
Cte de Beaune and although her French father skipped a
vinous generation by becoming an engineer, Danielle Cyrot k
the family tradition alive by diving into the diverse world ofwinemaking.
After taking one introductory winemaking class at the
University of California at Davis, Danielle was hooked. She
graduated in 1998 with a degree in Enology and Viticulture a
had internships working harvests at Schramsberg and Artesa
Napa Valley.
Wanting international experience, she traveled to Alsace,
France to learn from the best. At Domaine Sipp Mack, she
learned that the key to making excellent wines was the region
where the grapes were grown. She also learned the importanc
of letting nature take its course. She traveled on to Haselgrove
Wines in Australia and was exposed to a technical way tomaking wines by manipulating the tannins, sugar levels and
yeast concentrations.
In 1999, she returned to California and worked for Stags
Leap Winery working under mentor Robert Brittan for six yea
He gave her the confidence to experiment with wines, to trus
her palette when tasting wines. Today, Danielle brings a hybri
of organic and technical techniques to St. Clement wines, but
more than anything else, she simply trusts her palette.
Danielle Cyrot prides herself on St. Clement Vineyards
flagship wine, the Oroppas Cabernet Sauvignon based blend,
which constantly receives 90 points from Wine Advocate Rob
Parker Jr. The wine contains notes of dark chocolate andraspberry jam, leading to a nice, long finish. Cabernet Franc
and Petite Verdot were blended in to enhance the structure.
Each lot was aged separately in 70 percent new French oak fo
nineteen months and blended together before bottling.
What matters most to Danielle? I want people who drink
my wines to have fun with them. Let me be the geek, the
technical one who brings the science and art of winemaking
together. I just want you to taste it, love it, and enjoy it.
Whether you are a wine connoisseur or just someone who lov
a good glass of wine, I hope you like what Ive created.

TASTING ROOM OF THE WEEK
MATRIX WINERYBY SUE StRAIGHt, tHE WINE WENCH
The word Matrix [may triks] has a number of meaninincluding the arrangement of connected things and a
situation in which something develops. Matrix Winery i
therefore aptly named, because it possesses a unique
arrangement of connected things (excellent vineyards,
talented winemakers, fabulous wines, a gorgeous tasting
room and friendly, knowledgeable staff). This arrangeme
of connected things creates situations in which delicious
wines are enjoyed in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
Located just a short hop down Westside Road from th
wine-drenched hamlet of Healdsburg, Matrix Winery is
of the gems of the Russian River Valley. The winery and
tasting room are housed in a rustic, barnlike building,
surrounded by tasteful landscaping (a big hedge of
rosemary and pink tea roses border the garden, where a
of colorful flowers bloom in perfumed profusion). Oak a
redwood trees shade the general area and a wisteria-
covered arbor shades the picnic area, where several
wrought iron picnic tables are artfully placed, inviting
visitors to stay and sip a while. The patios panoramic vie
of the Russian River Valley is breathtaking.
The inside of the tasting room is just as inviting as its
surrounding grounds a multitude of windows let in th
Sonoma County sunshine (and the panoramic views),creating the perfect backdrop for the tasting rooms
dramatic dcor. A curved, wooden-topped bar made of
glass bricks dominates one side of the room and a coupl
tall tables with barstools beckon the weary tasting room
traveler on the other side of the room. The walls are don
in a cool gray and lined with colorful prints of fall grape
leaves.
The wines at Matrix Winery are excellent! I tried a few
during my visit and enjoyed them all. The following win
were my favorites:
2011 Sauvignon Blanc ($20) Wow! What a prettySauvignon Blanc! Mouthwatering aromas of pink
grapefruit, pineapple, cut hay and lemongrass lures the
taster into a bright, juicy mouthful of consistent flavors.
2009 Pinot Noir, Bacigalupi Vineyard ($38) Come to
Mama! This delicious Pinot is loaded with aromas and
flavors of ripe cherry, rose petal, spice box, orange peel a
vanilla, all lovingly wrapped up in a silky, sexy mouthfee
Take my advice, go to Matrix Winery and taste the
delicious wines, enjoy the warm hospitality and take in t
stunning views. Tell em The Wine Wench sent you.

gourmet dining establishments, 40 boutique shops

Parducci Wine Cellars announced the transition to its new Small
Lot Blend line of varietal wines including Chardonnay, SauvignonBlanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandeland Petite Sirah that retail between $10.99 and $13.99.
The Small Lot Blend wines are crafted with an artisanwinemaking approach, usually associated with very small production, and represent a level of both value and quality not typically found inthis price point, said Parducci winemaker, Bob Swain.
The fruit for each Parducci Small Lot Blend varietal is sourced fromdistinct Mendocino vineyard parcels, or lots, each with its ownmicroclimate and soil composition. In addition to its own vineyards,Parducci works with dozens of local wine growing families, many ofwhom have supplied fruit to Parducci for three generations, and all ofwhom share Parduccis commitment to sustainable wine growing
practices. Each lot is individually vinified and cellared to develop its own
unique characteristics and flavor profiles. After carefully gauging eachlots characteristics, the winemaking team determines the final blend, adding and subtracting until achieving the right balance of flavor andtexture. After the wine is bottled, additional aging adds complexity.
Mendocinos oldest winery, Parducci Wine Cellars has beenmaking and selling wine since 1932. True to Parduccis deep roots
and legendary wines slogan, the Thornhill family continues the
brand tradition of making quality wines using sustainable winegrowing and land use practices. Parducci Wine Cellars is Americasgreenest winery, twice (2007, 2009) receiving the GovernorsEnvironmental and Economic Leadership Award, Californias highenvironmental honor. The winery operates with high standards anbroad eco-practices: carbon neutrality, use of 100 percent greenpower, certified sustainable growing practices, support of local famgrowers and the Mendocino community, water reduction, reuse anrecycling programs and earth-friendly packaging.

Occasio Winery has been receiving
tremendous accolades, with the WineEnthusiast recently declaring, John
Kinney is one of Livermore Valleys finest
winemakers. With their 2010 Angelica
just receiving 92 points, their 2009
Cabernet Sauvignon 90 points, and more
90 point scores on other small lot wines,
Occasio Winery is seeing tremendous
success from their winemaking philos-
ophy.
Owner and winemaker John Kinney
tells us that the Angelica rating is the
highest rating the Wine Enthusiast has
given to an Angelica styled wine, and the
highest rating ever given to a dessert wine
from Livermore Valley.
Occasio Winery is committed to the
Heritage varietals of Livermore Valley, with
a focus on small and micro lots wines, only
from Livermore Valley grapes. Kinney
crafts less than 200 cases per varietal, with most less than 100 cases.
With a production of around 1500 cases per year, this makes Occasio
one of the smallest wineries in the area.
This winemaker wants to keep production small and local, ensuring each wine is perfectly balanced and elegant, and consis-
tently representative of the terroir of which John is so proud. All
wines are crafted in their winery, with some tanks designed specifi-
cally for the style of wines John wishes to craft.
Working with local growers in the Livermore Valley to harvest
what John believes to be the best vineyard locations in the Valley,
Occasio believes that timing is also critical in growing and making the
best wines possible.
Its winged, pocket watch label is an expression of how critical
timing is, from determining the perfect moment for harvest to the
optimum time of each wines release. Occasio is actually latin for
opportunity, and one that presented itself to John in 2008, when heobtained his permit for a winery.
Opening the tasting room in 2009, he released a Petite Sirah,
Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Gris that first year, and is now
crafting additional varietals, such as Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and
his proprietary red blend, Sotto Voce. We dont release a wine that I
dont like, Kinney said. He always enjoys tasting his new wines and
is a big fan of Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
His clientele is growing by word of mouth, with sales up this year
by 40 percent. We are starting to get more recognition for doing
what we are doing, he said. Winemaking is a slow process; you only
get one shot a year.
Kinney plans on introducing a nseries of wines in the near future
Heritage Series, a testament to th
heritage varietals and crafted with
expense spared. Our wine c
members will receive these wines fi
and if any remains, we will offer those
our tasting room, says Kinney.
According to Kinney, the wineries
Livermore are improving and are n
producing world-class wines at incr
ible value. Wine enthusiasts can witn
the winemaking process onsite
Occasio and will most likely meet
winemaker on any given day!
