Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE)

• 17,000 Kaiser Permanent CA members white,

educated, employed

• 10 ACE categories: experienced physical,

sexual, and/or emotional abuse or neglect,

witnessed domestic violence, experienced

the loss of a parent, had a parent who had

been an alcoholic, had a mental illness, or

had been incarcerated.

• 2/3 reported at least 1 ACE, 40% 2 or more

• One in six reported 4 or more

10

10

RESULTS

People with 4 ACES compared with people

who had none:

- Twice a likely to be diagnosed with cancer or

heart disease

- 7X more likely to be alcoholics

- 6X more likely to have depression

- 12X more likely to have attempted suicide

People exposed to six or more ACEs

died 20 years earlier than those who

had none.

reactions? (safety)

❖ Describe incidents that involve using both the Wizard Brain

and the Lizard Brain. (9/11, Gingerbread Boy, Finding the Green)

❖ Describe Lizard Brain reactions and Wizard Brain responses:

--When someone trashes you.

-- When you get pushed.

-- When you see someone being bullied.

-- When your friends pressure you to break rules.

Wise Way #2:Build a Constellation

of Support

Double Line – Very Supportive

Single Line – Somewhat Supportive

Broken Line – No Support at All

What is a Constellation?

What does support mean?

Who do you go to when you need help?

What other types of resources can help

you and give you support?

33

34

© 2018 Patricia Gorman Barry Ph.D., R.N.

Constellation of Support

Awareness of people and what resources to go to for help involves knowing how to evaluate the type of help you

need and identifying the best place to get it

This includes learning how to recognize people who will help you succeed, and

understanding why people close to you may not be able to give you the support you need

35

36

© 2018 Patricia Gorman Barry Ph.D., R.N.

Constellation of Support

Think about the people or resources

where you can get help.

What can you do if you feel like there is no one who can

help you?

What to do if the person whom you went to for help makes

the problem worse

Name support resources that aren’t people.

Red Flag Warnings

Red Flags are warning signals your body sends

to you to alert you of a problem.

Internal Red Flags

What might sad feel like on the inside?

What does mad feel like on the inside?

What does excited feel like on the inside?

What does hungry feel like?

What does afraid feel like?

What does happy feel like?

Red Flag WarningsExternal Red Flags (Outside Red Flags)

How does your body show that you are sad?

How can other people tell that your are mad?

How does you body show others that you are excited?

How can people tell that you are afraid?

How do you show people that you are happy?

indicate?

work with are feeling?

The root of many problems is the inability

to separate fact from opinion.

We tend to listen to gossip, rumor and innuendo

instead of facts.

Problems arise because we

think opinions are facts.

IDentify Your Choices (IDC)Lizard Brain users react without realizing they have choices. This underlies victim thinking as they blame others and think that their lives are controlled by fate, luck,

and/or chance.

Wizard Brain thinkers recognize that they have more than one

choice, and use thinking skills to assess and analyze all their

choices so they make the best choice possible.

Wise Way #8:Consequences

Consequences Now and Later (CNL), Consequences Affecting Others (CAO).

Wizard Brain thinkers are aware of the consequences of their choices.

They use thinking skills to help them assess and analyze the consequences of their choices now, the consequence later (CNL), and the consequence affecting others (CAO).
