Nicola Smith Dinner in Hospital

Preoccupied with the process of painting, with repetition, and with the passing of time, Nicola Smith has spent the past four years painting French actor, director, and mime Jean-Louis Barrault (1910-1994). She is interested in the relationship between cinema and painting, taking imagery from film stills.

This newest series of oil paintings and watercolours looks to Canadian film Ce qu’il faut pour vivre (The Necessities of Life), directed by Benoit Pilon, 2009. And American/ German co-production The Neverending Story, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, 1984.

Like frames in a film-reel, the images repeat themselves, changing incrementally, or suddenly, over time.
