Greetings, May 2012 Here‟s an article I recently published to the Peace Corps Africa Program & Training newsletter about the NGO fair: “The two-day NGO Fair in Bamenda, Northwest Cameroon was held on February 23-24, 2012. As a Peace Corps Partnership Program project with the motto „Connecting for Progress,‟ the goals of the NGO fair include: 1) increasing networking and resource exchange between NGO participants; 2) encouraging the spirit of volunteerism among the youth and general public; 3) promoting corporate social responsibility among businesses through philanthropy; and 4) creating an NGO directory for organizations and local government. Nearly 500 participants and organizers attended the event, including 76 NGO & donor stands. Peace Corps Volunteer Carmen Chang organized the event and worked with Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) volunteers to encourage networking and collaboration efforts among Cameroonian NGOs. NGO participants have already felt the impact of the event through new introductions and potential partnerships for the near future. A strategy session at the closing ceremony called for action – to keep the NGOs connected through future meetings to advocate the NGO sector as a whole. NGOs in the Northwest region of Cameroon will seek to continue networking opportunities and assessing opportunities to organize subsequent NGO fairs in the future.” This project idea was conceived in November 2010 with support from NWADO, ACMS, Heifer Camer-oon, Plan Cameroon, and SNV. As a Peace Corps Partnership Program project, the NGO fair was suc-cessfully executed through financial contributions of $3,841 (1,778,500 CFA) from my family & friends back in the U.S. (54% of the total budget) and $3,336 (1,545,000 CFA) from community contributions in Bamenda (46% of the total budget). A huge THANK YOU to Essoka Security, Brasseries Cameroon, Clas-sic Printers, Ayaba Hotel, Jeneb‟s Restaurant, Imagine Bakery, Bamenda I & II Councils, Bamenda City Council for giving back to the Bamenda community. We hope this directory will provide the opportunity for you to further networking and partnership op-portunities between the NGO, business, and government sectors within Cameroon. But this is just a start and there are many more organizations out there. In the near future, look to participate in the Cameroon Development Directory website for a more comprehensive list of development actors at: www.camdd.org. VSO volunteer Michelle Hain will be in touch with those interested parties. We appreciate everyone for taking part in the NGO fair - as sponsors, supporters, volunteers, and par-ticipants. We would not have been able to put on such a historic event without your participation! Best wishes,

Carmen Chang Chair/Peace Corps Volunteer NGO Fair Executive Planning Committee 2010-2012 carmchang@gmail.com

About the Peace Corps

U.S. Peace Corps Around the World (from www.peacecorps.gov) President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961 by executive order. In 2011, Peace Corps com-memorated 50 years of promoting peace and friendship around the world. Historically, more than 200,000 Americans have served with the Peace Corps to promote a better understanding between Americans and the people of 139 host countries. Today, 8,655 volunteers are working with local communities in 77 host countries. Peace Corps volunteers must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. Peace Corps service is a 27-month commitment. Peace Corps Cameroon Peace Corps has worked in Cameroon since 1962 and approximately 4,000 Volunteers have served in the country. Currently, there are five active projects in Cameroon: edu-cation, community health, agroforestry, community enterprise development, and youth development. The common themes that run through all Peace Corps Cameroon pro-jects are impact, focus, counterpart involvement, Volunteer competence, and organiza-tional professionalism. Through collaboration and good teamwork, the Peace Corps has made a difference in many aspects of life in Cameroon, one community at a time.
