Jigsaw Strategy
2
"Step 1: For a class of 36 students, form 12 groups of 3 students each. "
Step 2: Each student will be an expert of one law of motion.
Step 3: The experts disperse to “research meetings” with other experts. There will be 12 experts for each law. The 12 members will split depending on the availability of resources say, into 2 teams. Step 4: After research the experts disperse and go back to their group and present their knowledge.
Step 5: Collectively they (each group) will demonstrate their learning using a presentation, model, song, play, video, writing a book or any other style.
Group 1
1st law expert
2nd law expert
3rd law expert
1st law of motion
Group 1 Expert
Group 2 expert
Group 3 expert
Group 4 expert

SPS7. Students will determine relationships among force, mass, and motion.
a. Apply Newton’s three laws to everyday situations by explaining the following:
• Inertia • Relationship between force, mass and acceleration • Equal and opposite forces S8P5: Students will recognize characteristics of gravity,
electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature. a. Recognize that every object exerts gravitational force on every other object and that the force exerted depends on how much mass the objects have and how far apart they are.
S8P3. Students will investigate relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects.
a. Determine the relationship between velocity and acceleration. b. Demonstrate the effect of balanced and unbalanced forces on
an object in terms of gravity, inertia, and friction.

Objectives
✓Students will be able to explain why a body is jerked forward when a moving vehicle comes to a sudden stop."
"✓Students will identify how tension,
stress, shear, bending and torsion influence bridges construction."

2. The more of this an object has, the more force it takes to move it. ________."
3. The speed and direction of a moving object is known as _______."
4. Everything gets pulled down toward the earth’s center because of _________. "

Newton's 3 laws of motion-Video

Newton’s first law of motionAn object in motion will stay in motion and an object at
rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force."
""• An object will not change its motion unless a force
acts upon it."• All objects resist having their motion changed."• The tendency to resist a change in motion is called
inertia."• The more mass an object has, the greater its inertia.

Seatbelts?
1. Why do we have to wear seatbelts? "
2. Think of an alternative to seatbelts, describe how it would be designed and manufactured. "
3. What if I cannot wear a seatbelt due to medical reasons, how can I protect myself?
10
Newton’s second law of motion
The force of an object is equal to its mass times acceleration. (F=ma)
"• A net force changes the velocity of the object, and
causes it to accelerate. "• If an object is acted upon by a net force, the change
in velocity will be in the direction of the net force. "• The acceleration of an object depends on its mass.
The more mass an object has or the more inertia it has, the harder it is to accelerate.

Bridge crazy
Small cars, big trucks, bikes speeding down the bridge…
1. How do tension, compression, shear, torsion, and bending determine how a bridge is build?
2. What causes bridges to collapse?
3. How can the issue of bridge collapsing be prevented?
12
Newton’s third law of motion
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."
"• When object exerts a force on a second object, the second object
exerts and equal force in the opposite direction on the first object.""
• The force exerted by the first object is the action force.""• The force exerted by the second object is the reaction force.
13
The sky is not the limit…Up! Up we go!
1. How does NASA apply the concept of “action and reaction?”
2. How else can the concept of Newton’s 3rd law of motion be applied in the society?
Answers should include specific examples, and illustrations.
