Congratulations to all the “winners are grinners” for the Father’s Day and NRL
footy tipping competition. I saw a lot of smiling faces as a result of the Father’s
Day raffle; however I didn’t always see smiling faces in the NRL footy tipping
competition. There certainly are some competitive members in the New
Auckland Place community and good-humoured sledging between competitors
was overheard on a weekly basis. I was incredibly surprised on several
occasions when I was consulted on which team would win as my preferred
code of Footy is AFL. This results in me having limited knowledge of NRL even
though my son plays the game and has played at a state and national level.
After 11 years of spectating I still ask whoever is seated next to me why the
Referee blew the whistle and what was that for???? Needless to say, I am not
a popular choice to be seated next to at games.
However, I am also a grinner as my AFL team the mighty Richmond tigers won
the premier trophy again this year. Not bad effort, twice in three years.
Goodonya Boys.
Another celebration will be held this month when New Auckland Place will
celebrate its 9th birthday. It was 9 years ago on the 19/10/2010 that we
welcomed our first resident Phyllis. Come along on the 18/10/2019 at 2pm to
help celebrate our birthday. Clyde Cameron and the Gukes will be entertaining
and our talented catering team will be providing a celebration cake.
A huge thank you to Kim and Les Flanders for donating the wonderful piece of
artwork which is displayed in the outdoor café area. The painting compliments
the beautiful garden / Café area. Kim has done an amazing job in painting the
quintessential Aussie animals in a bush setting. Who knew we had such a
talented artist working at NAP.
Until next month………. Dawn

The first Jack O’Lanterns were
actually made from turnips.
The word “witch” comes from
the Old English wicce, meaning
“wise woman.” In
fact, wiccan were highly
respected people at one time.
According to popular belief,
witches held one of their two
main meetings, or sabbats, on
Halloween night
Samhainophobia is the fear of
Halloween.
According to Irish legend, Jack
O’Lanterns are named after a
stingy man named Jack who,
because he tricked the devil
several times, was forbidden
entrance into both heaven and
hell. He was condemned to
wander the Earth, waving his
lantern to lead people away
from their paths
Ireland is typically believed to
be the birthplace of Halloween
Scarecrows, a popular
Halloween fixture, symbolize
the ancient agricultural roots of
the holiday
Halloween is thought to have
originated around 4000 B.C.,
which means Halloween has
been around for over 6,000
years
In many countries, such as
France and Australia,
Halloween is seen as an
unwanted and overly
commercial American
influence
