The Patriots in New York started to fortify the city. The New England units who had not gone to Canada with Benidict Arnold met General Washington's forces at Long Island between Brooklyn and New York City.. Combatants: British and the American Continental Army. The British drove the Americans from Brooklyn and forced them to evacuate New York.
