New Coke Oven Battery No. 3 – Arcelor Méditerranée (France)
Main project features
The new underjet compound type coke oven bat-tery n°3 in Fos-sur-Mer (France) was a “green-field” project aiming at making the steelworks fully independent in terms of coke for blast furnace.
The new battery is in line with the existing ones, adopting their geometrical dimensions. The exist-ing machines as well as auxiliaries (coke tower, coke wharf, etc.) also operate the new battery.
The main features of the battery are:
Coke output 265,000 t/a
Number of ovens: 18
Oven length: 15.6 m
Oven height: 7.6 m
Oven width (av.): 0.44 m
Collecting main: nr.1 pusher side
Oven axis to axis distance: 1400 mm
Heat consumption: 2400 / 2230 kJ/kg
Useful volume: 50 m3
Coking time: 17h 15min
Start-up: July 2006
The coke output capacity and quality is based on the following data:
Coal moisture: 7-9 %
Ash (av.): 6-8 %
Volatile matter (av.): 23-24 %
Coal/Coke yield: 78 %
The following combustion gases are used:
y Coke oven gas
y Blast Furnace gas
y Steelmaking gas
Refractory design
To optimize refractory design and reduce the total execution time, bricks have been fully, automatical-ly designed through “VAP”, the Virtual Assembly Program, developed for brick design analysis.

Time schedule
The order was awarded in October 2004 and the first coke was pushed in July 2006.
Environmental protection
Guarantees are based on EIPPCB prescriptions (European Inte-grated Pollution Prevention and Control Bureau), according to US rules and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards 2010.
Dust in waste gas is 50 mg/Nm3 max.
NOx in waste gas is 500 mg/Nm3 max.
To design the battery in compli-ance with the guarantee values, the FAN (Flame ANalysis) system has been used, specially devel-oped for NOx evaluation and tem-perature distribution analysis.
