Why did English men and women move to America?

#1 Economic- They could make a better living.

•Lower Class- They could own land and be a farmer. They could be their own boss. They could get out of the dirty, crowded English cities.

•Middle Class- They could own a business, shop, or large farm. They could be their own boss and have the opportunity to make more money.

#1 Economic- They could make a better living.•Upper Class- Invest money in building colonies and get richer. They never go to America themselves. Sometimes they saw America as a good place to put the poor and get them out of England and out of their sight.

•Example of a colony started for economic reasons: Jamestown, Virginia.

#2 Religious- They could worship God as they pleased.

•America was a place to get away from the established church and worshipthe way they wanted. Some Englishmen wanted to stay Catholic. Some Englishmen wanted the new Church of England to change even more. America would be a haven (safe place) for the persecuted or religious idealists.

•Example of a colony started for religious reasons: Plymouth (Pilgrims)

#3 Political- They could make their own laws.

• In the 1600’s, England had bad kings. They wanted to be absolute rulers and ignored the Magna Carta. There was much upheaval in the English government. There was a bloody civil war between the king and Parliament. English men and women could get away from the bad kings and war and go to Americawhere they could have some say in their government.

#4 Social- They could move higher up in society.

•Workers and farmers dreamed of upward mobility in society. In England, a class structure kept Englishmen in a very rigid ranking from upper class to lower class. Each person had a place in society and stayed there. In America, hard work and success would be rewarded with movement up in society.

3 Types of Colonies

1. Corporate Colonies- The King gave charters to joint stock companies to found (start) and govern colonies for profit, with the king getting a percentage. Jamestown, Virginia and Plymouth were both corporate colonies.

3 Types of Colonies2. Proprietary Colonies- The King gave charters to individuals (usually his friends or relatives) to colonize and govern. The king claimed a percentage of their profit. (Remember– A proprietary colony is privately owned.)

3. Royal colonies- A colony run by the king. Control varied from king to king depending on their individual attitude.
