1 Explain the relationships between technological developments and 20th and 21st century music by:

Unit Tasks To pass this unit you have to show that you have met the Outcomes and Assessment Standards by completing the following 6 (7) assessment tasks: Task 1:
Five detailed reports on selected genres. Task 2:
One report on how a technological development has influenced a number of genres. Task 3:
One report on any key innovator who pioneered / developed an influential new technology. Task 4:
One report on the need to protect intellectual property; including a relevant case study. Task 5 (Listening Test):
Correctly identify genres and detail attributes which helped in their identification. Task 6:
Three listening reports, identifying relevant 20th or 21st century music concepts. Task 7 (optional):
Two song plans identifying main sections and musical concepts of the piece of music.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment As part of your Course Assessment you will have a final listening exam which will assess breadth of knowledge and understanding of concepts related to music technology and 20th and 21st century music. This paper will ask you questions covering:
knowledge and understanding of 20th and 21st century musical styles and genres, and how this
relates to the development of music technology
skills, techniques and concepts associated with recording, editing, mixing and producing audio
Tasks For Outcome 1 you must complete four written/oral tasks (8 reports in total) and one Listening task. All tasks must be completed to achieve a Unit pass. For Outcome 2 you must complete three written/oral tasks. Although Tasks 7 is optional, you are strongly advised to complete it as it will help you to prepare for your final Course Understanding Assessment.

How to Listen When listening to music it is important that you start to pick out both the musical and technological characteristics. This is as important for reviewing your own work as it is for when you are listening to and analysing professional recordings. Once you start to hear the production in music you will discover that much more is happening than just instruments and voices. Being able to identify musical, recording and production techniques could give you inspiration for your own work and in turn will improve your listening abilities. As a guide, try to focus on the following areas when you are at the research stage in your tasks:

Year in which it was recorded / performed
Line-up of the band
Main musical features o Melody / Harmony o Rhythm / Tempo o Texture / Structure / Form o Timbre / Dynamics

Unit Assessment Task 1: Genre Reports To achieve Assessment Standard 1.1 of the Unit, you must show your understanding of relevant genres/styles of 20th or 21st century music. Think about music you have studied, then choose five genres from the following list:
jazz funk soul/R’n’B indie new wave electroacoustic reggae world music 20/21st century classical
For each of the five genres you have chosen, you must:
identify a key innovator describe at least three attributes of the chosen genre describe one or more technologies that are essential to the genre list any examples of music of this genre you have listened to; which helped you develop your

Unit Assessment Task 2: Technological Developments To achieve Assessment Standard 1.2 of the Unit, you must show that you can explain how a technological development has influences a number of genres. You should create a short report, of at least 300 words, which:
identifies one specific technological development explains how the technological development has influenced at least two genres
You may choose to present your response as a written or word-processed document, orally or in some other format. Whichever format you choose, you must include the information above.

Unit Assessment Task 3: Key Innovators To achieve Assessment Standard 1.3 of the Unit, you must show that you can explain how a key innovator has influenced development in music technology. You may choose any key innovator who pioneered a new music concept or style; or who invented or developed an influential new technology relevant to 20th/21st century music. You should create a short report, of at least 300 words, which:
identifies one key innovator describes how their innovation has had an influence beyond their own immediate work
