HOW ELECTIONS WORK2014

INDIA IS A DEMOCRACY. THE GOVERNMENT IN INDIA IS FOR THE PEOPLE, FROM THE PEOPLE, BY THE

PEOPLE. THERE ARE TWO MAIN ASSEMBLIES

TO GOVERN THE COUNTRY :LOK SABHA AND RAJYA

SABHA

RAJYA SABHARajya Sabha consists of total 250 people out of

which 12 people are chosen by the president. The

chairman of this assembly is the vice president. To be a part of the Rajya Sabha, aperson must be above 30 years of age. Members are re-elected every 6 years.

LOK SABHAThe Lok Sabha is known as

the house of people. It consists of 552 people.

Upto 530 people are representatives from all 29

states, 20 from Union Territories and 2 chosen by

the president from the Anglo-Indian community.

The members are re-elected every 5 years.

CABINET MINISTERS

Cabinet Ministers are a group of

ministers who help in the smooth

functioning of the country.

PRIME MINISTER

The Prime Minister is the chief of the government, chief advisor to the

president, head of council of ministers, appoints cabinet ministers, represents the

country in high level meetings and international organizations and attends

sessions of the parliament.

COALITION GOVERNMENT

A COALITION GOVERNMENT IS WHEN A PARTY STANDING IN THE

ELECTIONS, IS NOT ABLE TO FORM COMPLETE MAJORITY

(50%) , IT JOINS WITH OTHER PARTIES TO RULE.

HOW A LAW IS PASSED ?

IF A LAW NEEDS TO BE PASSED, THE LAW IS FIRST READ OUT AND DISCUSSED IN THE LOK SABHA AND RAJYA SABHA. THE LAW IS SENT

FOR THE PUBLIC TO READ AND AGREE, WHEN THERE IS A MAJORITY, IT IS AGAIN READ OUT

IN THE ASSEMBLIES

AND WHEN THERE IS A MAJORITY BY 51% PEOPLE AGREEING TO PASS THE LAW, IT IS

SENT TO THE PRESIDENT FOR HIS APPROVAL, HE CAN MAKE CHANGES IF WANTED. THE

CHANGES SUGGESTED BY THE PRESIDENT ARE MADE AND THEN A NEW LAW IS PASSED.

• Elections are held in every five years in india.• The last elections were held in 2009.

• It was the longest election in the country's history.,

Running in nine phases from 7 April to 12 May 2014

• According to the Election Commission of India, 814.5 million people were eligible to vote, with an increase of 100 million voters since the last general election in 2009,making it the largest-ever election in the world.

• Bjp defeated congress and aam admi party to win the elections.

• Modi made his first foreign visit to Bhutan• he was looking forward to nurture and

further strengthen India's special relations with Bhutan.

•  Bhutan was a "natural choice" for his first foreign destinationbecause of the "unique and special relationship" the two countries shared. 

brazil

• In July 2014, he visited Brazil for his first multilateral visit, the 6th BRICS summit was held at the north-eastern beach city of Fortaleza.

• He travelled there via Germany.

nepal

• The last visit of an Indian prime minister to Nepal was 17 years ago in 1997 by I. K. Gujral.

• The talks with Nepal were focused on reviewing the 1950's Treaty of Peace and Friendship, India-funded hydroelectricityprojects in Nepal and otherinfrastructure projects in Nepal.

japan

•  His 2014 visit further strengthened the ties between the two countries, and resulted in several key agreements, including the elevatingthe already established strategicpartnership to the "Special Strategic Global Partnership". 

United states

• Modi delivered his maiden speech in the sixty-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly on 27 September 2014, where he called for reform and expansion of United Nations Security Council including India's long standing demand of a permanentmembership.
