This image shows three-dimensional photonic crystals based on bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3), a promising multiferroic material. The foreground shows a 3D model of a photonic crystal. The background shows a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photograph of the actual sample. The two images were combined and processed using Adobe Photoshop.
