Accounting, Business or Economics are not required for any Commerce, Business or Marketing courses (except for the Accounting degree in NUI Galway).Although you would be at an advantage to have studied them to L.C. level.
At least one and often two is required for the following:
Science, Engineering, Medicine(2) Dentistry(2)
Veterinary, Pharmacy(2)
Physiotherapy(2), Radiography, Nursing, Architecture(UCD), Occupational Therapy
Speech Therapy, Dietetics, Med Lab Science, Optometry.
Choosing a Third Language
• Rule out entry to certain courses in some colleges where a Third
Language entry is a requirement
• A Third Language is a requirement for most courses in NUI
colleges for courses in Arts, Social Science, Law, Commerce,
Accounting, Human Sciences, Medicine & Health Sciences.
• Other colleges have a third language as a requirement for
courses that have a large language component e.g. European
Studies, Languages & Marketing, Hotel Management,
Languages & International Tourism.
• Health Sciences do require a third language in NUI colleges for
pharmacy, medicine etc.
• Entry to the Cadetships in the Army, Aircorps, Army Equitation
and Naval Services require a third language
• NCAD require a third language or art
• Many science and engineering courses include the study of
French or German from scratch.
• No third language requirement for the Gardai, Nursing,
Apprenticeships or most PLC courses
• This information is subject to change so always check
with the course provider or Guidance Counsellor
Most employers look for a minimumof 5 passes (O6) in L.C. (includingEnglish and Maths).
The vast majority of current employersare looking for school leavers withcomputer skills.
In the past, students needed only the J.C. to secure anapprenticeship. However, Employers are now seeking studentswho have achieved good grades in the Leaving Certificate.
In the past Apprenticeships were traditionally associated with technical and practical careers such as Motor Mechanics, Electrical Work, Construction
25 New Apprenticeships into Ireland – areas where there is severe skills shortages (Software Development, Financial Services, Chef/Baker, Butchery, Travel & Hospitality, Medical Devices
The duration of the new apprenticeships varies, depending on the degree of difficulty involved in meeting the set learning outcomes for the particular apprenticeship programme.
2. Apprenticeships
Students need to have attained a minimum of 5 passes (O6) in order to gain entry.
Exact subject requirements for each course can be found in the relevant PLC brochures, as well as on the Qualifax website.

• Remember that the Leaving Certificate requires a great amount of hard work over two years. It is much easier to work hard if you have chosen, in so far as is possible, subjects you like.
• The Leaving Certificate also requires a sense of purpose. It is easier to be motivated if you have a clear goal in sight e.g. to be accepted for a particular course, apprenticeship or to get a good job, etc.
• A good level of education can only improve your chances. Use your ability to its fullest.
