governments and economies?

Purpose of GovernmentMake and uphold lawsProtect citizens and their rights of life,

liberty, and property. Some do not.Maintain order

1. Democratic Government is elected by people voting in

elections Two main types of democratic govts:

– Republic – people elect representatives to make laws

– Democracy – people vote on every law

2. TheocracyGovernment is controlled by religious leaders and laws.

3. Oligarchy A government where only a few people

have power and control the country. (could be the richest, smartest, a certain race)

4. DictatorshipGovernment by a single person

having unlimited power and uses the military to stay in power.

5. MonarchyHas a king or queen as head of the

country. Their position is based on royalty and passed down through heirs. Power stays in the family.

6. AnarchyWhen there is no government..

–Chaotic because no government to protect the people and make laws

Economics

Economy –the production (making) and consumption (buying or using) of goods and services within a country– Supply (what is produced) and Demand

(what is purchased)

1. Traditional Economy

Based on tradition and custom

Centers on family and tribe

Resources are given based on inheritance

Farming, hunting, gathering

2. Command Economy Government makes all the decisions

– Tells businesses what and how much to produce There is no competition between businesses Consumers lack choices and have little

freedom

3. Market Economy Individuals/businesses make all decisions Competition determines price and

increases the quality of products– Iphone vs Andrioid phones (competition)
