OMATANEDistance: 31 km one-way
Elevation: 31m – 582m
Time: 2-4 hours
Grade: Advanced
• Turn off SH1 at the Mokai Gravity Canyon sign onto Gorge Road. Immediately after the turn off, a small bridge crosses the Hautapu Stream. As with other bridges in the area it is well worth a look down.
• Head straight ahead up Gorge Road and then down to the bridge crossing the Rangitikei River.
• Turn right onto Omatane South Road where a short, sharp ascent will test even the fittest.
• Follow the road around and turn right onto Potaka Road. This road is gravel and a steady climb.
• Once the Kawhatau River is crossed there is a short climb, then turn right onto Kawhatau Valley Road.
• At the bottom of a downhill, turn right onto Ruahine Road, and straight over the Rangitikei River. Just over the bridge, you’ll find Mangaweka Campgrounds, a stunning scenic spot perfect for camping and swimming.
• Starting from the Mangaweka Campgrounds, cross the Mangaweka Bridge over the Rangitikei River and continue south on Ruahine Road for 17km, before turning right onto Rangiwahia Road.
• 1.5km down this road you’ll find the settlement of Rangiwahia. There are toilets here, and a camp ground (but no shops).
• Continue through Rangiwahia, and at the historic Pemberton corner, turn right onto Mangamako Road.
• From here the route is primarily a descent towards Sandon Block Road, which is to your right at the end of Mangamako Road. Sandon Block Road is gravel, and winds its way up and down through farmland and bush with views of the Rangitikei River in the distance.
• At the end of this road, you’ll reach SH 54, Cheltenham – Hunterville Road. Turn right, and you’ll come to the entrance of Vinegar Hill Domain, marking the end of the trail. The domain is a beautiful place to take a swim, and camp out for the night.
• Starting from Hunterville, head northwest on Ongo Road, before taking a left turn onto Aldworth Road, passing through farmland to SH1.
• To avoid the Highway it is possible to bike the gated section of the old road, opposite the entrance to Bruce Park Scenic Reserve.
• Turn right onto Mt Curl Road, which starts of with a steady climb, before getting steeper all the way to the summit.
• (For those wishing to avoid the steep climb up to Mt Curl there is an alternative route via Leedstown Road, found to the left, just after the start of Mt Curl Road).
• A long undulating downhill (gravel at first) follows before you turn right into Warrens Road.
• Take the next left onto Galpins Road, and then follow this road round to the left onto Tutaenui Road. This road will lead you all the way into Marton, the main town in the Rangitikei District.
• Starting in Marton, head south on Wellington Road before turning left onto Makirikiri Road, which brings you onto SH1.
• Here, turn right, then take the next left onto Kakariki Road. The trail follows Kakariki Road in an easterly direction as it drops down the terraces to the Rangitikei River, and then becomes Mingaroa Road on the left. The road then ascends, and becomes Wilsons Road.
• Take a right turn into Hurst Road (a gravel road). At the top of Hurst Road, the trail turns left and heads south along Wightman Road until it reaches SH1. A detour can be made to the shops and cafés in Bulls, which is the last town on the cycle way before Himatangi.
• Cross SH1 carefully, then continue along Tangimoana Road. This will become McDonell Road, before coming back onto Tangimoana Road again.
• Follow this all the way to Tangimoana Beach, where there is a camping ground with small cabins to rent.
• The trail turns left onto Tangimoana Beach Road and then right at the sign to the boat launching ramp.
• The first left turn leads onto a sandy track to the beach. The trail heads south for 8 kilometres along the coast to the town of Himatangi. The sand can be soft, so the best time to ride is within 2 hours each side of low tide – plan ahead.
• Starting at Manchester Square in Feilding, head north on Kimbolton Road (State Highway 54) for 13km until you reach Cheltenham, home to the award winning Cheltenham Hotel, and the General Store which does the best ice-creams around.
• From Palmerston North City, head down Fitzherbert Avenue, over the bridge and up onto Summerhill Drive.
• Follow this road around and it will become Aokautere Drive.
• Take a right turn onto the Pahiatua Track, and continue along for just over 8km before turning left onto North Range Road. This road is compacted gravel, and is where the fun starts!
• This road continues for about 18km, before becoming Hall Block Road, which is where you’ll start your descent down onto Gorge Road, and the Bridge Café for a well-deserved drink and meal.
• On Hall Block Road, you’ll see the entrance to Te Ara o Mahurangi; a Grade 3, 2km downhill mountain bike trail through native bush – a great option for a faster descent to the finish line if you have a suitable bike.
• From Manchester Square in Feilding, head north on Kimbolton Road for 4.5km then turn right onto Colyton Road.
