A1. Inclosures I and 2 depict the main body of a first-echelon reinforcedmotorized rifle regiment in an approach march formation moving towardBlue forces. The main body is in two columns on parallel road nets 3-5 kmapart.
2. One of the motorized rifle battalions is not shown because it is actingas the advance guard for the regiment. The advance guard would be 5-30 kmahead of the main body, depending on the proximity of the FLOT and the typeof offensive mission. For a similar detailed configuration of the advance
guard, see HQ TRADOC, DCSDOC, Threat Directorate Study, "Soviet MotorizedRifle Battalion (reinforced) in the Advance Guard Role," 21 Mar 79 and
"Soviet Tank Battalion (reinforced) in the Advance Guard Role," 14 May 79.
3. The main combat power of each column is a motorized rifle battalion, reinforced with a tank company and a self-propelled howitzer battalion.A tank platoon accompanies each motorized rifle company to maintain acombined-arms balance. The tanks are positioned forward in the column inorder that their fire power and mobility can be fully used. Instead ofthis configuration of tanks and BMP's, there could be a tank company leadinga motorized rifle battalion.
4. In this scenario, other units are also attached to assist the motorizedrifle regiment in crossing water barriers. The left column has a PMP
bridging company attached, while the right column has an assault-crossingcompany (heavy tracked amphibian, PTS).
5. Normally the 122mm and 152mm artillery units are forward in the columnin order that they can quickly move out of the column and into firing
positions. They may form part of a regimental artillery group (RAG) inorder to destroy targets that affect the advance of the unit. The ammuni-
) tion aboard the self-propelled howitzer, its ammunition truck and 2-axle

trailer provides the howitzer with enough ammunition to fire three thirty-minute barrages. Additional supporting fires are provided by an attachedbattery of 122mmi multiple rocket launchers positioned in the left column. When the battery prepares to fire, the unit's ammunition trucks and trailersare positioned to the rear of the launcher vehicles. The multiple rocketlauncher unit provides area saturation fires.
6. The~right flank column has several flank security units because it isexposed.to BLUE observation and attack. The left column requires less flanksecurip because on its left, not shown, is another regiment also movingfora~o aarallel road net.
7. A divisional SA-8 missile battery is providing air defense for thisarea of the motorized rifle division. The battery's four TELs, commandand control vehicle and two transloaders are interspersed in the column. The SA-9 platoon concentrates on close-in protection of the regimental maincommand post and its supporting signal company.
8. The *two columns are approximately 23 km in length, thus the distancesbetween the vehicles in the graphics are not to scale. The normal intervalbetween vehicles is 25-50 meters but may be extended to 100 meters if itappears that the Blue forces are preparing to resort to nuclear weapons. The interval between vehicles is a variable dependent upon the combatsituation, condition of the road nets and degree of visibility. Under thecover of darkness the distance may close to 25 meters. An extended intervalof 3-5 km exists between battalion-sized forces in column. This intervalserves two purposes; first, as a reduction in loss from a surprise nuclearattack and secondly, to reduce telescoping of the column.
9. The speed of a column in an approach march varies from 5 km/hr to 30 km/hr.The column reduces speed as it approaches the battle area. For illustration, some Soviet writings suggest a speed of 12 km/hr when the main body of theregiment gets within 10-15 km of the Blue force. This reduced speed providestime for the artillery to place fires on the Blue forces. If a march columnmoves cross country, its speed would vary from 5 to 15 km/hr.
10. With regard to the proportion of hard-skinned vehicles to soft-skinnedvehicles, in the right column approximately 40 percent of the vehicles arehard-skinned (protected from artillery fragments) while about 60 percent aresoft-skinned -- having no similar protection. In the left flank columnone-third of the vehicles are hard-skinned and two-thirds are soft-skinned.
11. HIND helicopters are executing reconnaissance missions in advance ofthe main body of the regiment and also are ready to prevent attacks by Bluehelicopters.

12. The numbers and types of weapons and vehicles in each unit are closelyin accord with the intelligence community's views for the 1982 time frame.
13. In order to show these units in the assault posture, HQ TRADOC has
developed two mini-studies. The Soviet tank battalion (reinforced) deployedfor attack is graphically shown in a mini-study of this title, dated 22May 79. Likewise, the motorized rifle battalion (reinforced) postured inan attack on a Blue force is depicted in a mini-study of 14 May 79.
14. Copies of the above studies may be obtained from HQ TRADOC, ATTN: ATDO-
TAG, Fort Monroe, VA 23651.
15. Local reproduction is authorized.
16. Analyst: Mr. Dale D. Best, AUTOVON 680-3563.
