Minnesota Kicks Off Five-Match HomestandFollowing a disappointing result in the Empire State, Minnesota United returns to TCF Bank Stadium for a match against Columbus Crew SC. Minnesota is unbeaten in its last three matches at home, outscoring its opponents six to four for two wins and a draw. Crew SC has been a mixed bag this season, starting off hot but dropping into a bit of a lull. The lack of consistency has caused Gregg Berhalter’s men to go from the top of the East to sitting just above the red line in the standings. MNUFC will be glad to return home where points are easy to come by for the club, as opposed to struggling on the road. They will be hoping this stretch at home will be enough to propel them up the standings in the West.
MNUFC Scores Early, NYCFC Comes BackMinnesota United got off to a flying start at Yankee Stadium Thursday night, but New York City FC marched back into the match to claim a 3-1 win. Just nine minutes in, Johan Venegas unleashed a shot from 30 yards out. NYCFC goalkeeper Eirik Johansen bobbled the ball, allowing forward Christian Ramirez to bury the rebound and get his 10th goal of the season. The Loons held off their hosts for much of the first half, suppressing the dangerous attack led by David Villa. However, NYCFC would equalize just before halftime. Second-half goals from rising star Jack Harrison and leading scorer Villa would give the home side a comfortable lead and hold off the Loons for the victory.

• Columbus is the last team currently in the Eastern Conference to win an MLS Cup.
• Columbus players took a league-high 200 corner kicks in 2016.
• Opened in 1999, Columbus’ MAPFRE Stadium was the first soccer-specific stadium in MLS.
• Crew SC’s last MLS Cup appearance was in 2015, where it fell 2-1 at home to the Portland Timbers.
• This is the first time Minnesota has faced Eastern Conference teams back-to-back.
• This is the only Tuesday match on Minnesota’s schedule.
• The Loons are undefeated in their last three matches at TCF Bank Stadium.
• Columbus was originally named the Columbus Crew until late 2014. The club re-branded with a new logo and updated its name to Columbus Crew SC, which was adopted for the 2015 MLS season.
• Christian Ramirez scored his 10th goal in MLS on Thursday in New York. He is the first MNUFC player to reach that mark in MLS.
• Ramirez was caught offside a record four times against NYCFC.
• Though he wasn’t credited with an assist on Thursday night, Johan Venegas has set up three goals for Ramirez.
• Bobby Shuttleworth has made at least two saves in each of his last seven appearances. Eight stops against RSL on June 17 was the highest during that stretch.
• Jermaine Taylor, Francisco Calvo and Johan Venegas will be absent due to international call ups for the Gold Cup. Taylor will represent Jamaica while Calvo and Venegas join Costa Rica.
• Columbus has no players called up for international duty at this time.
• This match begins a five-match homestand in league play for the Loons. MNUFC is undefeated in its last three home matches.
• At 29 years old and 322 days, Jerome Thiesson became the oldest MNUFC player to score a goal when he finished off an equalizer against Vancouver on June 24.
• Four Loons – Sam Cronin (1A), Kevin Molino (1G/1A), Taylor (1A) and Collen Warner (1G/2A) – have earned points in their career against Columbus.
• Shuttleworth has 14 saves and two clean sheets in seven matches against Crew SC in his career.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 22 teams from across the United States and Canada.
After a successful bid to host the World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with ten teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.
The league’s first match was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United if front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by the Columbus Crew (SC) who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 14 teams play in soccer-specific venues.
The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 matches during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away matches. The remainder of the schedule is filled with matches against conference opponents. The top six teams in each conference at the end of the year qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
The postseason begins with the third through sixth seeds in each conference playing in a knockout round. The winners advance to the conference semifinals to play the first and second seeds in the conference. In this round, the format switches to a two-match aggregate series, with the team scoring the most goals over the series moving on. The same format is used for the conference finals. The winner of the conference final moves on to face the other conference champion in the MLS Cup Final. The final is a single match, hosted by the team with the best record in the regular season, with the winner being declared MLS Cup Champion.
