Wabash Station ground breakingAfter years of planning, renovation of the historic Wabash Station finally got underway in August—at least, ceremonially. U.S. Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond, Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman, Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Region VII Administrator Mokhtee Ahmad and City Public Works Director John Glascock launched the construction project designed to preserve the historic station, improve bus services and ade-quately house transit staff. Despite blistering summer heat, a crowd of nearly 100 gathered behind the station to watch offi-cials turn the first spade-full of dirt.

The project is funded via a $2.3 million federal earmark se-cured by Senator Bond. This federal grant is 80% of the project, with the City matching the remaining 20%. The renovation has an estimated completion date of July 2007.

A floor plan and illustration of the finished station can be viewed at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
