The smallest window inEngland can be found on theexterior wall of The GeorgeInn on a street called TheLand of Green Ginger (namedafter the medieval spicemarket that operated here). The story goes that thewindow, which is adjacent tothe gateway used by the oldmail coaches, was used as alookout by those responsiblefor caring for the horses.
Visit Ye Olde Black Boy inHigh Street to see one of thefew remaining old pubs in Hullthat has kept its original style.Originally opening as a pipeshop in 1720, it has also been abrothel. It became a publichouse in the 1930s. There aremany ghostly tales attachedto the old building. Regularsare supposed to have photosof ghostly apparitions; onewas grabbed round the neckby a pair of ghostly handsappearing from the bar wall. Itwas also rumoured that aprevious landlord’s dog wastraumatised by spending anight downstairs in the pub.Who knows what it saw?
Another of the pubs in Hullto retain its original look asa Grade 2 listed building isYe Olde White Harte downSilver Street which originatesfrom the 1550s. This building
contains the famous ‘PlottingParlour’ where Sir JohnHotham and others plottedagainst Charles I whoarrogantly believed themonarchy had the right to doand take what they pleased.Wanting to levy illegal taxes,‘Ships money’, members ofthe gentry refused to pay. YeOlde White Harte is also hometo the skull of a youth. Doctorsand physicians have examinedit and a fracture on the topsuggests the youth died froma blow to the head. It issuggested an angry, drunk seacaptain hit the boy with apistol. The boy was discoveredhidden under the staircase inthe 19th century. This skull canstill be seen in a Perspex casebehind the Small Saloon Bar.
The old Grammar Schoolbecame a private residenceafter world war two and a fewghost stories originate fromthis time. It was rumoured thata vicar or curate wandered thedark corridors and could beseen floating past the firstfloor windows. Whenever theapparition was seen terribleevents would take place.

Hull Mini Guide16
Like any city, Hull has its ownunique attractions and places ofhistorical interest. Here’s someyou may not know about.
Things to SeeHoly Trinity ChurchThis magnificent historical buildingis one of the grandest parochialchurches in England. (It is recordedas England's largest parish church byarea in the Guinness Book ofRecords.) Being over 700 years oldit has many unique and fascinatingfeatures that are well worth a visit. The font dates from 1380 andWilliam Wilberforce was baptisedhere. Open for both visitors andworship. There are several cafésand pubs located in Trinity Square infront of the church which makes it anideal place to relax and have a break.
Wilberforce MonumentOpposite Queens Gardens, in frontof Hull College standing 31 metreshigh is the Wilberforce Monument -a statue of William Wilberforce, theformer Hull MP and anti-slaverycampaigner. In 1834 it was situatedon Monument Bridge but wasmoved in 1935 as it became a traffichazard as the town expanded.
ArchitectureFor those interested in architecturethe city centre has two goodexamples of ex cinemas. The Tower(1914-1978) stands on Anlaby Rd. bythe southern Hull ParagonInterchange car park and oppositethis is the ex Regent cinema (opened1910), with its fine Art Deco top.
Hull Old TownNamed as one of the nation’s best-preserved urban areas, Hull’s OldTown is packed with traditionalpubs and cafes alongside themuseums quarter, which holds fourof the city’s eight free museums.Enjoy a relaxing bite to eat whileabsorbing the atmosphere of themedieval cobbled streets.
St Mary’s Church
Humber BridgeTowering 30 metres above the riverHumber, the 2,220 metre longbridge used to be the longestsingle-span suspension bridge inthe world. Now in the Top 5, it isstill an awesome feat ofengineering. Spend an afternoontaking in the views as you strollacross the bridge or walk under itat Little Switzerland.
In Lowgate, this church is a fineexample of a medieval church whichhas been added to over successivegenerations. No one is sure when itwas built but it is referred to inrecords in 1327. With years of historyto delve into, see four medievalshields high in the east window andElizabethan panelling in the clergyvestry. William Wilberforce’sgrandfather was a Churchwardenhere and it is reasonable to assumeCharles I worshipped here whenstaying at Wilberforce House.
