SIX TEACHERS FOR THREE DAYS OF LEARNING
AND FELLOWSHIP
The TVQA Spring Seminar Committee is excited about the selection of teachers, classes,
lectures and fellowship activities planned for the TVQA Spring Seminar – June 25, 26, 27,
2015. We have a varied selection of national and local teachers who will teach whole and
half-day classes and will provide an excellent balance of techniques and skill levels.
The teachers are as follows: Nancy Mahoney, Pat Wys, Jean Shaw, Fran Sargent, Theresa
Raleigh and Janice Stewart.
Two dinner/lectures (Thursday and Friday at 6:00 p.m.) have been planned. These events
will give us the opportunity to be together as a group as well as enjoying the enlightening and
entertaining lectures. The dinner/lectures are open to the public with advance reservations.
No tickets will be sold at the door. It would be a good time for guilds to get together as a
group and come for the evening. Area merchants, TVQA shop owners and seminar teachers
will have donated excellent door prizes: books, gifts, notions, fabric, etc. These donations
will be divided into two groups and be given away only at the dinner/lectures.
The time for the classes will be 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Whole-day classes
will meet in both time blocks. Half-day classes will meet in the a.m. time block. This format
gives a two hour break for lunch to check out local shops, as well as TVQA vendors who
have set up at the seminar. Only TVQA vendors may sell at the event. The vendor space is
limited. Contact Arieanna Glennon at (home) 615-459-5338 or (cell) 615-423-4120 or at
ariglennon@comcast.net with questions.

THURSDAY - ALL DAY CLASS
JEAN SHAW - “Wink and a Smile” Designed by Lisa Christensen Jean Shaw has received permission from the original pattern designer to reproduce the pattern
and teach “Wink and a Smile”. It is an old pattern and has not been on the market for a while.
It is just beautiful.
I chose the 30’s fabrics to make the quilt on display. I have seen the quilt made in a variety of
different fabrics and thought each was wonderful…so select your favorite grouping of fabrics
and let the fun begin. I do recommend that the star points need to have a solid appearance to
get the effect that they are spinning around the blocks. I chose to use one background fabric
for my quilt, but it also works great to have a “scrappy” background using a variety of similar
tone fabrics.
6
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:
For Nine Patches, Cornerstones and Border:
Four Mediums - ¼ Yard Each Five Darks - ¾ Yard Each
In my sample quilt, I used 19 different 30’s reproduction fabrics and made all my nine-patch
blocks “scrappy”. You may plan accordingly with your mediums and darks so that your nine
patches are ”defined” dark and light or scrappy.
Star Points…Five Colors - ½ Yard Each
Assorted Backgrounds…Six Yards Total
Binding…¾ Yard
PATTERN:
Jean will sell the pattern to the class members for $2.00.
SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS:
Sewing machine in good working order with extra bobbins. Basic sewing supplies, i.e., pins,
scissors, seam ripper, neutral thread. Basic rotary cutting supplies…mat, rotary cutter,
6”x12” (or larger) acrylic ruler and 12 ½” acrylic square.
CUTTING REQUIREMENTS PRIOR TO CLASS TIME:
SEWING RECOMMENDATION PRIOR TO CLASS TIME:
If you are comfortable creating your nine-patch blocks, I would recommend that you make a
total of 29 nine-patch blocks prior to class time. Each nine-patch block should measure 6 ½”
square prior to being placed in the quilt.
FABRIC FIRST CUT SECOND CUT
Nine Patches From Each Medium Fabric Two - 2 ½” Strips
Nine Patches From Each Dark Fabric Two - 2 ½” Strips

SATURDAY CLASS
JEAN SHAW - “Tavern Blues”- Designed by: Red Crinoline Quilts
Pattern Required: “Tavern Blues” by Red Crinoline Quilts. Jean will sell the pattern to the
class members below cost at the time of the class, for $6.50.
As is my custom, I have created this quilt with several color groups of fabrics (red, blue and
brown) as opposed to the two colors used in the pattern sample. This quilt is an opportunity to
work with one color family or as many as you would like to make the design your own. The
goal of the class will be to complete two blocks during our time together and then discuss
sashing, setting triangles and borders.
Fabric Requirements: (The pattern is designed for a quilt that will measure 94” x 94”)
½ yard each of 13 different dark prints for pieced blocks (each dark print will create two
blocks)
½ yard each of 6 different lights for pieced blocks and sashing
1 yard block print for cornerstones and binding
1 3/8 yards blue print for set-in triangles and corner triangles
½ yard light print for inside border
2 1/8 yards wide stripe print for “fussy cut” sashing or 1 5/8 yards non-stripe print fabric
3 yards border print
In the pattern, each dark print is used to create two identical blocks. I have made each of my
blocks from a different fabric. Listed below are the cutting instructions for one block, i.e. if
you are making two of each fabric then cut twice this amount for the two blocks. Even though
our goal is to complete two blocks during class, bring all of your fabric with you in case you
have time to do additional piecing.
Remember: The above chart is to complete one block!
14
Fabric First Cut Second Cut
Dark Print 2 – 3 ½” strips 9 – 3 ½” Squares
12 – 2” x 3 ½” Rectangles
4 – 2” Squares
Light Fabric 4 – 2” strips 70 – 2” Squares
15
Supply Requirements:
Sewing machine in good working order – don’t forget your pedal and power cord!
Neutral thread; wind a couple of bobbins so you will have them during class
Basic Sewing Supplies…scissors, seam ripper, pins, marking pencil
Basic Rotary Cutting Supplies….rotary cutter, small mat, acrylic ruler (at least a 6”
x 23” will do the job)
Jump Start: If you would like to do a little prep work before class, feel free to
mark a diagonal line on the back of the seventy 2” squares that you have cut from
the light fabric.
Bring paper and pencil…we will discuss working with different fabrics in
sashings, set in triangles and mitered borders even though we will not actually do
any “hands on” work with these during the class time.
SATURDAY CLASS
JANICE STEWART
Janice Stewart is the Manager of Accomplish Quilting in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. She will
bring an Innova Quilting Machine to the Seminar and demonstrate techniques to her class
members and well as being one of our vendors for the event.

or short-arm. She will demonstrate loading a quilt using Red Snappers and other helpful
quilting tools.
