Using MERCS, compare and contrast two movements in two different
Sports.
WHAT MERCS STANDS FOR?M = Muscles usedWhat muscle is being used in the exercise?
E = Energy System used?Is it Aerobic or Anaerobic.Steady and not too fast orFast and short exercise.
R = Range of Motion/ Movement completedExercised used should be Similar to the one in the Sport.
C = Contraction Type Concentric – muscle shortensEccentric – muscle lenghtensIsometric – no movement
S = Speed of MovementDoes the speed of the exerciseMimic that of the actualSport.
WHAT ARE ITS USES?It is a very useful tool so that the training
exercise can be matched to the needs of the actual sporting activity.
ANALYSIS USING MERCSBy using the MERCS analysis we can break
down and assess what kind of gym or strength exercise is the most similar to that of the sport it is intended for.

COMPARING 2 SPORTSUSING SQUATS FOR LONG DISTANCE CYCLING
Quads mainly used for pedal stroke Squat exercise helps build anaerobic
system which helps to pick up pedal speedRange of motion is similar to that of a
pedal strokeConcentric contraction of quad muscle
is the same as one used while cyclingThe speed of the exercise is a little
slower than would be used

Muscle used would not be used by swimmer.
Both energy systems are used by the squat exercise similar enough to that for a short distance swim.
Range of motion is not used by swimmer
No similarity in muscle contraction
Does not use the same speed in muscle movement.
DEAD- HANG PULL UPS FOR CYCLING
Rating System
Score
M 3E 3R 2C 2S 2
Back and shoulder muscles needed for sitting posture
Anearobic system used by cyclist for short bursts of energy
Only uses same range of motion when tackling a steep incline.
Concentric contraction used in up phase of pull up
Speed of movememt similar to out of saddle sprint up a hill
DEAD-HANG PULL UPS FOR 200M BUTTERFLYThe back muscle are the
most important for swimmerGood mix of both energy
systems used just like the swimmer in a race
Similar to the swimmers pull phase of the swim stroke
Concentric contraction of lats and shoulders in exercise same as during swim
Swim stroke is a bit faster than the movement in exercise

CONCLUSIONTheoretically, the most “sport- specific” or
“functional” form of training is to perform the actual movement of the sport.
( Stiff, 2002)By using the MERCS analysis in this project it
clearly shows what exercise would be of best use for each individual sport.
Sports specific training is a means of simulating a movement or exercise in the weight room or gym with the purpose of it transferring to the playing field.
