Mental Maths Hints
(2D Shape Facts)Dear Parents,This week the children are exploring 2D shapes. The table below outlines the different properties of 2D shapes. It would be useful for your child to go over these shape facts each night so that their understanding of 2D shape and their recall of shape facts improves.
You could play the ‘Who am I’ shape game. For example you could ask your child:
I have 5 facesI have 5 vertices Who am I?
Answer = A pentagon.

Which of these shapes is not a quadrilateral? Write the name of each quadrilateral.
Which of these is a hexagon? Explain your answer.
Draw a pentagon.
These triangles are made using matches. What is the name of each triangle? Can you make an isosceles triangle using 10 matches?
Match the names to the descriptions
Link the prefixes to the numbers
How many lines of symmetry does each quadrilateral have?
Write down the names of the three quadrilaterals that have diagonals crossing at right-angles. (Try sketching them).
Which shape is not a polygon? Circle the correct letter.

What am I? • I have 1 side • I have no corners • I have no parallel sides • I only have one curved edge
What am I? • I have 4 side • I have no lines of symmetry • I have 2 pairs of parallel sides
What am I? • I have 3 side • I have 1 line of symmetry • I have 2 equal sides • I have 2 equal angles
Who has the combined largest number of sides? Show your working out. Ben has a hexagon and a trapezium. Jem has a parallelogram and an octagon. Millie has a nonagon and a triangle.
Which has the largest number of sides? Octagon heptagon decagon trapezium
trapezium parallelogram square
rhombus rectangle
For one of these quadrilaterals,
the corners are not right angles, the quadrilateral has rotational symmetry of order 2 and
the diagonals cross at right angles.
Write down the name of this quadrilateral.
Which has the least number of sides? Pentagon parallelogram nonagon heptagon

Dana is describing a quadrilateral.
The rhombus is one possible quadrilateral she could be describing.
Write down the names of the other two quadrilaterals she could be describing.
Answer _______________ and _______________
Draw two straight lines inside the rectangle to split it into
1 trapezium and 2 right-angled triangles. Put your answer on this diagram.
Find as many polygons as you can in this image. Name each one and say if it looks regular.
Tick (✓) or cross (✕) the properties of the quadrilaterals shown. The square has been done as an example.
