Introduction - What is Citation?

● A “citation” is the way you tell your readers that certain material in your work came from another source. It also gives your readers the information necessary to find that source again, including information about the author, the title, date & page numbers of the material.

APA MLA

Chicago

Harvard

Turabian

IEEE etc.

Guidelines and Requirements (SGS-UPM)

4

Introduction - Why citing sources?

• To giving credit to the original author. • Use other people’s work without plagiarizing. • Helpful to anyone who wants to find out more about your

ideas and where they came from. • Your ideas support with fact.

Previously, we are creating citation and bibliography by manually. We spent

lot of time to do this.

5

Introduction - When do I need to cite?

Whenever you borrow words or ideas, you need to

acknowledge their source.

The following situations almost always require citation:

● whenever you use quotes

● whenever you paraphrase

● whenever you use an idea that someone else has already

expressed

● whenever you make specific reference to the work of another

● whenever someone else's work has been critical in developing

your own ideas.

6

Introduction - What is Direct Quotation?

A direct quotation reproduces word-for-word material taken directly from

another author’s work, or from your own previously published work.

Examples of direct quotations that are in themselves

full sentences. Example 1

As Hattersley and McJannet (2005) state, “Giving and receiving

feedback are essential managerial skills” (p. 121)

If the name of the author or authors quoted does not

open the sentence, it is given at the end with the date

and page number.

Example 2

Many authors stress the importance of feedback because “giving and

receiving feedback are essential managerial skills” (Hattersley and

McJannet, 2005, p. 121.)
