From the Desk of Paul Craven It’s hard to believe we are at the midway point of the calen-
dar year, but the sunshine and temperature confirm it’s defi-
nitely summer in Florida! It’s great to see members enjoying
golf and tennis and the increased activity at the pool. Thanks
to all the members that encouraged friends to attend the pro-
spective member pool party last week. We had some very
good prospects at the event. Your friends make the best pro-
spective members, so please keep telling everyone how much
you love your Club!
Through May, the Club is in a good financial position. While
membership count is down slightly, trial membership num-
bers have significantly increased over the last 3 months which is a good indication for
member growth during the second half of the year. Member spending across all areas of
the Club is positive and outside usage is providing a good contribution to the bottom line.
YTD, the Club is ahead of budget.
There are lots of updates to provide you regarding facility enhancements. We’re very
pleased with the re-paving of the parking lot and are now working on improving the land-
scaping around this area. Our much awaited temporary expansion of the fitness center is
expected to be delivered the week of July 18th and therefore we anticipate opening in mid-
August. We look forward to accommodating the fitness needs of more of our members
than ever before! The digital informational boards are expected to be installed in the next
two weeks. This will be an exciting enhancement that gives us, along with the POA and
Women’s Network, improved communications as you are entering the community and the
Club. The Club will also be installing a new Lightning Detection System to improve the
ongoing safety of our members and guests on the course, courts, at the pool and at Wood-
land Parke.
We have a couple of member achievements that are worthy of recognition. You’ll see ac-
companying information on the last page of this newsletter, but I also wanted to ask you
to join me in congratulating two incredible member accomplishments - Dr. Tom Gonwa
for his Lifetime Achievement Award in his field of medicine and to John Lobb for quali-
fying for the US Senior Open Golf Championship. It’s an honor for the Club to be home
to such distinguished accomplished members.
We continue to encourage you to share exciting news and information with other Club
members. Discovered a new app that others should know about, celebrating a milestone
event or recommend a good vacation spot. We will feature your news on the back of the
newsletter. Please email Laura Bowman at Lbowman@jaxgcc.com and we’ll get your info
on the back page!
There are lots of exciting activities to keep you busy this summer at the Club … and some
feature air conditioning like Ladies Night on the 12th and Trivia night on the 15th. Of
course, we also have some great outdoor summer events, too! We hope to see you at the
July 4th pool party and triathlon! Additionally, we’d like to congratulate the ladies teams
featured on the tennis page for a successful season and wish continued good luck to our
Summer Swim Team … Go Dolphins! Last but not least, best of luck to our golfers partic-
ipating in the 2016 Quad-Club Series, and also to our Tennis friends taking on San Jose
Country Club next month! Bring home the trophy and bragging rights so we can continue
our reign as the best Club in Jacksonville!
See you around the Club,
Paul Craven

Celebration & Family Triathlon!
EAGLES:
6/2 - Kathy Danberg recorded a special Eagle “2” on hole #7. The round occurred during the play of a Summer Team match. Her shot of 115 yards using her 8-iron spurred her on to win the match. Congratulations!
6/9 - Sam Hart recorded his Eagle “2” on hole #7 this round. He holed a pitching wedge from 111 yards. Great Shot!
6/17 - Tim Mylod made it a “Turkey” on hole #7 this month by scoring his very own Eagle “2.” His trouble shot from the right trees using a 5-iron found its way into the cup as he recovered from a slightly errant tee shot. How exciting!
PERSONAL BESTS:
5/23 - Tom Murtagh was a successful qualifier in the Local Qualifying for the US Open by posting a fine round of 70 at Sawgrass Country Club. He then went on to the Sectional Qualifying at Timuquana CC on June 6th; however, did not qualify for the open. Great try and better luck in 2017. We are proud of your success representing JGCC.
5/28 - Ron Reed managed a great round posting a 74. His round finished off a great day with a -2 under par 34 on the incoming back nine … hard to beat a Net 61 on the day. Great round!
6/17 - Trey Sanders recorded his personal best at Jacksonville Golf & CC with a fine round of 68. He was accompanied by Rick Foster and Devon Hopkins. Trey is an aspiring Professional Golfer and it appears he is on his way to reaching his dream! Good round.
HOLES-IN-ONE:
5/21 - Debra McDermott recorded yet another ACE for her 3rd career hole-in-one. She was playing Deerwood CC during the time our course was closed for aeration and made her “1” on arguably the toughest par 3 hole at DCC, #15. Her shot of 133 yards to an uphill green was hit with her 6-hybrid. Congratulations!
Golfing Achievements
4th of July Golf Celebration! The Golf Shop will be open Monday, July 4th, for play with double tee starts morning and mid-day. The Golf Shop will conduct our annual “Flag Day” event. Golfers with a registered handicap playing golf in the morn-ing will have the opportunity to participate by paying a $10 entry fee and test your skills against the course. Each player will add their handicap to par (72) and place your flag in the ground at the point where your last shot stops. 20% of the field will share in the total purse and the payout will be posted as sweeps in your golf account to spend in the Golf Shop. Additionally, the golf shop will have a special 4th of July sale! The Golf
Shop will close at 3pm on Monday, and the Shop and Course will be closed on Tuesday, July 5th!

Jacksonville Golf & CC, San Jose CC, Marsh Creek CC and Deerwood CC have formed a local Men’s Home & Away Series where each Club hosts an event over the summer. Each
Club will field 8 members with two professionals for a 2-Man Stableford Points scoring event. The event dates are all Friday afternoons in a 12:30pm shotgun: July 22nd at San
Jose CC, August 12th at Marsh Creek CC, September 23rd at HOME & November 11th at Deerwood CC. The entry fees are: $60 per person plus $20 cash skins game with lunch, scoring and hors d’ oeuvres after play. Everyone will play the same set of tees … about
6,400 yards per course.
Call the Golf Shop at 223-6910 to sign up for any of these events you want to play and/or are available for. Our goal is to give everyone that signs up an opportunity to play. If we are oversubscribed, a Lottery will determine the 8 spots for each event. Players may have the opportunity to play more than one event after everyone is given the chance to play.

LGA 18-Hole Summer Match Play Season Starts Strong!
The JGCC 18-hole lady golfers Jacksonville City Summer Series Match Play season is underway! Twenty-four of Northeast Florida’s golf clubs compete in 4 areas. The format is 4-ball match play, and teams compete for points to determine the area winners and, ultimately, the overall Summer Team
Championship winner. This year marks the Series' 40th Anniversary. Last year JGCC took home the area trophy and is working hard to defend that trophy. As of this writing, after 4 matches, JGCC leads its area in points total! Captain
Mary Rice and Co-Captain Jane Annunziatta are leading the charge! Match play is a completely different form of competition where each hole stands alone and
a player may concede a hole at any point during the play of the hole. Some other key differences: In stroke play, if you are unsure how to proceed, you
may play a second ball. In Match play that is not an option; it is important for you and your opponent to try to resolve the issue or make a claim and seek
rules guidance upon completion of your round. Also, there are some infractions in Match Play where "loss of hole" is the penalty, for example, in Match Play
grounding your club in a hazard is loss of hole for that player. Match play is a fun and exciting form of golf! Wishing the JGCC LGA continued success as they match strokes and wits during the remainder of the summer team play season.
Handicap Committee Update!
The Committee met on June 9th, and they want to continue the campaign of publishing items of interest to the membership offering an education aspect of playing golf and maintaining an accurate handicap index. The topic of July is Match Play. The USGA requires scores to be posted from all rounds of golf played in accordance with the Rules of Golf. Match play scores are included. When playing a match, and a
player’s stroke is conceded by his/her opponent, the player is to record the score he/she was “most likely to have made” for scoring purposes. The “most likely” is defined by the number of strokes already taken plus the players’ best judgment of the number of strokes needed to complete a given hole. The most like score is also subject to reduction under the ESQ procedure. The score to record for holes not played in a match are to take par plus any handicap stroke for each hole. 13 holes completed constitutes an 18-hole round and must be completed in this format. Less
than 13 completed holes will result in posting a 9-hole score.
~ Junior Golf Camps are underway for the summer. Weeks III & IV are scheduled for July. The juniors seem to be having a great time! Thank you to all of our juniors for supporting our junior program at the Club. There are a few spots left for camps in July. Members can sign up online or stop by the Pro Shop for an application.
~ PGA Junior League is going extremely well with our second year of participation. All of the parents are very involved with their juniors, and the golfers seem to really enjoy the practice sessions and the matches in the round-robin format vs other Clubs. Our League has grown from 2015, and we look forward to the remaining matches ending this month.

Water Aerobics is the longest running class at JGCC. Our fantastic teacher Lauren Neil is the current reason for its large number of attendees. This is not a class of LOL (little old ladies) floating in the pool. It is a serious workout. A Misfit fitness tracker indicates we average one hour of vigorous exercise and 4,800 steps. The following testimonials
show our dedication to the class:
“Lauren is incredible with her knowledge and tenacity to ensure we learn, get a full body workout and transform our bodies … I was skeptical about water aerobics when I arrived here and I am a true convert with Lauren. (I am willing to withstand the ribbing from my NYC friends when I tell them I take water aerobics! LOL)” - Diane Liewehr
“A great post-rehab workout after multiple shoulder and knee surgeries. It keeps the stress off my joints and my Parkinson’s doctor approves.” - Suzi Miller
“The class is great! If you put in the work, it really works!” - Regina Regan
“Water aerobics has toned me like no other exercise. It’s fun, cool and lots of great friends!” - Becky Romig
“20 years and counting, including attending class through a pregnancy up to the day I went into labor.” - Amy Stapleton
