Form ReLeaf

NEW this year

On-line registration for ALL students Fulfills Health Office requirement

IF already done…just need to “register”

Only PAPER required is physical

Current/good for TWO years

Information will carry over for NEXT year

Parents WILL receive confirmation IF registration is complete

Philosophy

CO-curriculars…Educational Activities NOT “extra-curricular”

Coaches are teachers…extension of classroom

Varsity Winning DOES matter

Sportsmanship #1…Modeling

NO guarantee of playing time or equal time

Sub-varsity Player development #1

Winning is secondary

CUTS

Some programs DO “cut” players

“Cut” means NO uniform

Being on JV-A and not V is NOT a “cut”

JV and JV-B…player development

Normally 9th & 10th graders

11th graders only for sustaining program

Not all have sub-varsity e.g. track

ALL grades eligible for varsity

Coaches’ decision…NOT mine

Communication

1st communication: ALWAYS “player to

coach”

Usually it’s about “playing time,” “team

placement,” or “cuts”

Coach WILL provide specifics on:

○ Why cut/placed on team?

○ What to do to increase playing time

Appropriate time and place for that conversation

Self-advocacy…Life Skill

I will NOT be involved in this conversation

Communication…continued

What will I get involved in?

Player safety concerns

Player treatment concerns

Includes harassment, hazing & bullying

Harassment

ILLEGAL by LAW

Behavior directed toward “9 protected

categories”

e.g. race, religion, sexual orientation, gender

identify, gender, etc.

EVERYONE’s responsibility to report it if

you see it or hear it

Report it to ME

Hazing

ILLEGAL by LAW

Requiring “new” members to do

“something” in order to “be part of the

team”

Potentially dangerous and always harmful

UVM & Milton

EVERYONE’s responsibility to report if you

see it or hear about it

Report it to ME

Bullying

ILLEGAL by LAW

Student-to-student

“Repeated over time”

Embarrass, humiliate, intimidate, demean

How the “victim feels” NOT how the

perpetrator “meant it”

EVERYONE’s responsibility to report if you

see it or hear about it

Report it to ME

Concussion Protocol

Brain INJURY…can be “life threatening”

ATC (certified trainer)

At all home lacrosse games (law)

At all home games (on site) for other sports

ALL coaches & officials are trained

Return to play (RTP) protocol (Tony/Toria)

Return to school/learn protocol (504)

Substance Use Policy

In-season athletes…24/7

1st violation (use/possession/under influence) Evaluation

Suspended for 20% of games e.g. BB/Lax = 3

May still practice, travel, etc.

@ Party: Leave = OK…Stay = 1 game

2nd violation in “school” year DONE with co-curriculars for year

3rd violation in CAREER…school board

Attendance Procedures

MUST be in school for ALL required

activities in order to practice/play that

day… “warning(s)” per team

What’s ok?

Dr. Appt, DMV, College Visit, etc.

What’s NOT ok?

Sleeping in

Late to school

Felt sick, but now ok

Obligations

Players must “clear” obligations before

playing in any games.

Library AND “other”

Library only tells student what s/he owes

Other: books, uniforms, parking fines, etc

Final Thoughts-Adversity & Perspective

Adversity

Will happen this season

Cut, injured, “tough call,” losses

Easy to be winner

Learn more from losing/adversity

Perspective

Just a HS game!

Coaches, players & officials doing their best Want to criticize official…Become one!

Somebody HAS to lose CVU/LI-2000

Big Picture July 2005-DS

Dec 2014-KR

Apr 2015-JM & RT
